Move over, John Wick and John Dutton — there’s a killer ranch owner who makes them look positively tame.
If you thought John Wick was the endgame for lone-wolf revenge flicks, think again. There’s a new unlikely action icon on the scene — and believe it or not, she's got more in common with your nan than with Keanu Reeves. The Last Stand of Ellen Cole has quietly crept up the streaming charts and overtaken some serious heavyweights to become the top film on Paramount+ worldwide. Yes, you read that right. Lin Shaye – the horror stalwart usually found in haunted houses – is now apparently the most feared enforcer in Montana, and frankly, I can't say this is the crossover anyone saw coming.
The Last Stand of Ellen Cole is now officially the most-watched film worldwide on Paramount+.
Montana Mayhem With a Twist
Here’s the deal: The Last Stand of Ellen Cole blends John Wick’s maniacal revenge streak with the cowboy grit of a Taylor Sheridan drama. Plot’s simple enough – Ellen Cole, played by 82-year-old Lin Shaye, stands her ground when a sinister developer tries to muscle in on her Montana ranch. She’s the sort of stubborn ranch hand you’d expect to see growling at Kevin Costner’s John Dutton, but unlike Dutton, Cole's got a serious punch hidden behind her walking frame. Literally. You get oxygen tanks, cowboys, and then a barrage of stunt-filled violence that would make Liam Neeson feel his age.
This is western action mayhem boiled down to 96 minutes – tight, relentless, and not remotely the sedate slow-burn you might expect from a cast led by someone eligible for a free TV licence. It’s honestly like watching Rambo break into a retirement home, set all the traps from Home Alone, and then outfight the burglars for good measure. And judging by the global numbers, audiences are loving every bit of it.

Came Out of Nowhere
Despite its bloody blitzkrieg up the streaming charts, The Last Stand of Ellen Cole barely made a dent when it first released back in 2024. Directors Derek Lee and Clif Prowse (who you may vaguely remember from their 2013 found-footage indie Afflicted) put this one out with almost zero fanfare. The supporting cast is one for the IMDb-obsessed: Liz Caribel Sierra, Craig Tate, Ty Olsson, Karan Gill, and the reliably suspect Hart Bochner (playing, what else, a villain).
The film snuck so far under the radar that it still hasn’t got a Rotten Tomatoes score, which is practically unheard of for anything breaking the global streaming top ten. But streaming has come to the rescue. Social media’s full of people calling it ‘ridiculously fun,’ with viewers comparing it to everything from Rambo to Home Alone. Lin Shaye seems to be getting most of the applause, especially for turning what could have been just a throwaway old-lady role into a proper, punch-throwing, one-woman army somebody described as ‘Jackie Chan better watch his ass. Just sayin’.’ Couldn’t have put it better myself.
