Rumors confirmed: Christopher Cantwell just let slip on Bluesky that he’s working on Lanterns Season 2. The acclaimed creator’s blink-and-you-missed-it post turns speculation into a solid win for the upcoming DC Studios series.

If you’re even half-tuned into the wild world of superhero telly at the moment, you’ll know Lanterns is DC’s next big swing at an HBO series. Now, there’s a new twist: Christopher Cantwell – yes, the bloke behind Halt and Catch Fire – has more or less outed himself as a key player for Season 2, well ahead of anyone’s PR timeline. Classic move.

Slip of the Ring: Cantwell Spills the Beans

So, here’s how it went down. Cantwell, who’s never really had a handle on keeping things air-tight secret, posted a shot of a green lantern ring on Bluesky – their version of Twitter, basically – and casually dropped:

"Yes, I’m joining LANTERNS Season 2."

Not a cryptic tease, not a ‘more news soon’ – just straight in. Next day, with the cat flailing about outside the bag, he stuck up another related image and chimed in again:

"Listen since it got leaked yesterday months and months before the announcement, I’m just gonna start periodically posting stuff like this. No clues. Just excitement."

If you’re keeping track, DC probably didn’t want this out at all so early, but here we are. As for what Cantwell’s actually doing – writer? executive producer? both? – he’s kept mum. But the rumour mill’s banking on him taking up both hats. Judging from his previous work, that would make sense.

From Coding Drama to Cosmic Shambles

Cantwell’s got a pretty enviable CV when it comes to genre TV. He co-created AMC’s Halt and Catch Fire, helped steer Paper Girls, chipped in on The Terror, and did a stint on Lodge 49. But for the comic-readers, he’s probably even more at home in the superhero trenches: he’s written for Batman, Superman, Iron Man, Thanos, Moon Knight, and The Mask. You want a punch-up with actual character work? He’s your man. It’s about time DC grabbed someone who gets capes beyond surface-level quips.

Lanterns Season 1: Coming Sooner Than You Think

For everyone still catching up: Lanterns Season 1 is dropping on HBO and HBO Max this August – specifically the 16th, if you want to mark the calendar. Here’s the setup if you’ve missed the endless online chatter:

  • Main cast: Kyle Chandler, Aaron Pierre, Kelly Macdonald, Nathan Fillion, Ulrich Thomsen, Garret Dillahunt, and Poorna Jagannathan head the bill. Nicole Ari Parker, Chris Coy, Jason Ritter, Sherman Augustus, Cary Christopher, Paul-Ben Victor, Paula Patton, and Laura Linney are also on deck.
  • The plot: Focus is on two Green Lanterns you’ve probably heard of – John Stewart and Hal Jordan – who play the intergalactic police. They’re landed with a grim murder investigation in the American Midwest, which of course spirals into some ‘everything you thought you knew is wrong’ business.
  • Release date: Friday, 16 August 2026, exclusively on HBO and HBO Max.

If you grew up with your superheroes grittier than a builder’s tea and TV that isn’t embarrassed to crack on with weird cosmic stuff, Lanterns might actually live up to the expectation. And with Cantwell now officially (if accidentally) on board for Season 2, things just got a lot more interesting. Expect periodic hype-drops and, if today’s anything to go by, zero chance of surprises staying under wraps.
