Kathryn Newton has teased where things stand with Big Little Lies Season 3 in a new interview, offering the kind of cheery hint fans have been missing.

Here we are again, talking about Big Little Lies and whether we’ll ever see that elusive third season. You know, the one fans have had on their wish lists since 2019. If you’re one of those who’s lost hope, well, Kathryn Newton might have just chucked a bit of petrol on the dying embers.

Newton told People in a recent interview: "I’m really, really, really, really hopeful. I think good things. I think good things about Big Little Lies season 3. I would love that for all of us."

Newton, for those who haven’t watched since Theresa May was PM, played Abigail Carlson, the whip-smart, exasperated teenage daughter of Reese Witherspoon’s Madeline Mackenzie. The series made a splash back in 2017 and ran for those much-argued seven-episode seasons – two of them, the second roping in Meryl Streep for good measure. And yes, the regulars – Nicole Kidman, Laura Dern, Shailene Woodley, Zoë Kravitz – are all still hovering around in fan theories and think-pieces.

More Than Just Wishful Thinking?

Newton’s not the only one chiming in. Reese Witherspoon herself dropped a promising nugget while chatting to Jimmy Fallon back in June. She said season 3 is "in process", and when Fallon tried to call her bluff, she doubled down: "I am telling the truth."

If you want more official weight, series creator David E. Kelley gave a hint of the machinery actually moving in April at the New York premiere of his latest series. His words:

“We’re getting the band back together, and it should be a good run again,”

He also admitted he wasn’t “allowed” to dish out any more details, so don’t expect a plot summary anytime soon. And when pressed earlier last year, he said contracts weren’t signed for the big names, but everyone’s apparently on board ‘in spirit’. Take that how you will.

Seven Years and Counting

Yes, it’s been a full seven years since that first episode dropped. Hollywood time-lag at its finest. During this long wait, Newton’s managed to keep tabs on her old crew, especially on Witherspoon’s other big project, Elle – the Prime Video prequel about Legally Blonde’s Elle Woods, if you haven't clocked that yet. Newton's been quietly rooting for it from afar, so she’s either very supportive or just misses being part of the drama herself.

The first season of Big Little Lies aired back in 2017, and fans have now waited seven years for fresh episodes.
