John Boyega owes Finn to a stranger who stopped him to talk about Attack the Block
John Boyega says Tom Cruise nudged him towards Star Wars, after crossing paths with him and J.J. Abrams on a Mission: Impossible project.
Here’s one for the Star Wars trivia fiends: turns out John Boyega owes his career-launching Finn role to none other than Tom Cruise, of all people. Not exactly the Hollywood match-up you expect, but that’s what makes this story worth telling.
The Cruise Connection
Before Star Wars knocked on his door, Boyega was still best known for Attack the Block — a sterling bit of cult sci-fi, but not the full-tilt catapult into blockbuster territory. And according to Boyega, his big break all kicked off with a surprising bit of praise from Tom Cruise, who’d spotted his work and decided to intervene behind the scenes.
Boyega explained this bizarre bit of career fortune at a recent convention, recalling the exact moment Cruise stepped in:
And Tom Cruise stopped and said, dude, I watched you in Attack the Block. I'm there, like, where do you go from there? And I go, yeah, thank you, Mr. Cruise, Tom Cruise, sir, yeah, thank you. And he goes, no, you're really good. And he turns to J.J., and he goes, you have to put him in something.
Apparently, this wasn’t just a throwaway compliment — Cruise was talking directly to J.J. Abrams at the time. That would be the same J.J. Abrams who, not long after, happened to be steering the Star Wars reboot for Disney. So yes, the recommendation mattered.
From Broke to Breakout
Boyega admitted he was finding things a bit rough at that stage — penny-pinching through acting gigs, still largely unknown in the industry. Outside of Attack the Block, he had no big Hollywood credits. He set the scene rather bluntly at the same event, painting a grim picture of his life just before things turned around:

Then came the call. Suddenly he was auditioning for a mysterious “space movie,” initially billed only as “Boy One” (which, in hindsight, was obviously Finn). Within months, he’d gone from scraping together rent to landing front and centre in The Force Awakens (2015), taking on a character who ditches the First Order and teams up with Poe and Rey — and whose arc, for a while, was more interesting than anyone expected from a supporting Star Wars role.

The part wasn’t a flash in the pan, either. Boyega returned for both The Last Jedi and The Rise of Skywalker, picking up the BAFTA Rising Star statuette in 2016 and confirming that, sometimes, all it takes is a good word from the right Hollywood legend to change a bloke’s life entirely.
