Jennifer's Body 2 rumoured to roll cameras in October

Well, it looks like Jennifer's Body 2 might finally be crawling out of the grave, if you’ll pardon the phrase. On the rumour mill this week: a new entry in Production Weekly claims the long-teased sequel is gearing up to start filming in Vancouver this October. But, as always, no one at 20th Century Studios is saying a word in public. For now, treat this as promising but unconfirmed – though, to be fair, Production Weekly usually knows what’s happening before the rest of us do.

A Cult Favourite Rises (Again)

Back in 2009, Jennifer's Body launched under Karyn Kusama’s direction, landing with a bit of a thud at the time – it scraped together just $31.5 million worldwide on a reported $16 million budget. That’s a result that would normally send any thoughts of a sequel straight to the bin.

But, as horror fans will know, things took a turn over the last decade or so. Thanks to streaming, passionate defenders, and an overdue reappraisal of the film’s sharp-writing-meets-camp mood, Jennifer's Body has built itself a real following – so much so that loads of people now consider it one of the top cult films of the 21st century.

New Sequel Script: 'Unleashed' Version

The biggest sign this is more than old gossip? Diablo Cody – who wrote the original – says her script for the sequel is already done. Back in January, on the Boo Crew podcast, Cody revealed she felt “unleashed” this time round:

'It actually is not a typical sequel process, where you’re going “here’s what we’re going to protect from the first movie.” It’s more like all the ways in which I was restrained on the first movie, I’m now unleashed. So it actually is less a feeling of being cautious and more of a feeling of being careless in the best way... I love it but I actually feel like the culture has caught up with what we were trying to do with that movie. Now it’s like I can really stretch my legs. I really loved writing this script. There was not a moment of it that felt like work, which is unusual for me these days.'

For Cody, it’s not just about picking up where things left off, but responding to the way fans have rediscovered and reinterpreted the film since its release. She says the whole script is her answer to that: it’s about the film’s legacy in the culture, not just about Jennifer and Needy, but her own journey as a writer. She reckons you almost never see a film flop both critically and commercially, then somehow claw its way back to get a sequel. Frankly, I can’t think of another example either.

Producer’s Take: It’s Funnier, It’s Sharper, It’s Self-Aware

Producer Mason Novick is just as enthusiastic. He says the script is not only “so good and so funny” but also manages to both honour and poke fun at the first movie. Apparently, it riffs on the original’s reputation and isn’t shy about tackling things that would’ve been tricky back in 2009. Novick’s read it multiple times and is genuinely itching to make it.
