Jason Statham is swapping the usual punch-ups for a left-field thriller with the director of Deadpool 2 and Bullet Train — and the premise might surprise you.

Now and again, an action franchise comes along that's impossible to ignore, and John Wick has been that for well over a decade now. To say the Wick effect has haunted the action genre is putting it lightly — every new film with a bit of fight choreography or bullet ballet gets held up to its impossibly suave standard. But over on the other side of the ring, Jason Statham has built his own reliable action-man brand with the bare-knuckle, deadpan routine. Even then, Statham's films — like The Beekeeper — still get the inevitable Wick comparison, whether he likes it or not.

Now he's finally doing something about it, and trust me, it is not another moody gun-slinger retread. Instead, he's veering straight into parody territory with his most left-field project yet: a madcap meta-comedy with a title that feels like a dare. Statham has teamed back up with director David Leitch, the chap behind Deadpool 2, Bullet Train, and previously Statham's own Fast & Furious spin-off — hardly a dull CV — for the upcoming Jason Statham Stole My Bike.

Statham Turns the Genre on Its Head

If you ask me, calling Jason Statham Stole My Bike just "anticipated" barely scratches the surface; it's had my curiosity from the title alone, which lands somewhere between a fever dream and an internet meme. At first glance, it brings to mind the playfully bizarre tone of Being John Malkovich. However, the reality seems closer to what happened when Nicolas Cage sent up his own image in The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent — playing a fictionalised, heightened version of himself while poking fun at his own legend status.

Jason Statham Stole My Bike is set to hit cinemas on 6 August 2027.

Statham's new film is reportedly a meta-comedy, with him taking the mickey out of the kind of overblown action heroes he's spent years portraying. The actual plot is still a bit of a question mark, but here's what we've got: Statham, as "himself", nicks an ordinary bloke's bike. The wronged everyman then spends the rest of the film trying to track down the mighty Jason Statham to get it back. It's daft, granted, but in a good way — the premise is ripe for satirising just how little action movies care about the chaos they unleash on "normal" people just minding their business.

Comedy, but With Statham Still Punching People

This isn't Statham's first go at lampooning the stuff he does for a living, by the way. He nearly ran off with Spy, playing a hilariously overblown secret agent and sending up Bond types with brutal precision. This new outing, though, sees him doubling down on the self-mockery. Where John Wick flicks have a reputation for dead-serious, unstoppable-protagonist action with zero time for gags, Statham and Leitch are boldly flipping the formula. Not only that, but they're aiming for a PG-13 rating — so, less about spraying blood everywhere and more about comedic chaos and shenanigans.

No trailer yet, and they're not giving much away about exactly what "heightened Statham" will actually get up to — but Leitch's knack for balancing punchlines with punchups bodes well. The rumour is we might get our first look at the film when Leitch unleashes his next one, How to Rob a Bank, this November. Either way, Jason Statham Stole My Bike is set to ride into cinemas in August 2027.
