James Marsden is finally getting out of the black leather he wore for 27 years
James Marsden says Avengers: Doomsday will kit out familiar heroes in comic-accurate new suits — and hints there’s a looming foe behind the upgrade.
If you thought Marvel’s endless parade of multi-verses and reunions might calm down, think again. Avengers: Doomsday is gearing up to be the most all-in crossover the MCU’s pulled off yet—and yes, they’re really dragging back every possible face (and costume) from the last two decades. If you’ve ever fancied James Marsden’s Cyclops in something that actually looks like the comics, it appears your moment’s finally arrived.
Classic Costumes, Actually on Screen
Let’s be honest: those black leather X-Men uniforms from the original Fox run had all the style of a wet zip-up. Now, James Marsden—back as Cyclops after almost thirty years—is hinting at a shake-up. Apparently, Avengers: Doomsday has him and the other returning mutants suiting up in proper, comic-inspired gear. Early teasers have already shown Marsden in a look straight out of the 90s animated series. For the first time, these films might actually admit blue and yellow spandex isn’t the worst thing in the world.
Marsden sounds genuinely amped about bringing the old cast together, costumes and all. Here’s what he had to say during a recent interview, looking back on the X-Men and company reuniting under one roof:
It’s an absolute collision of three gigantic universes, coming together in the face of a very serious existential threat. You’re seeing time on screen. You’re seeing these characters from 27 years ago, in new costumes with new intentions and intensities.
Who’s Actually in This Thing?
If you’re keeping score, the cast list for Avengers: Doomsday is absolutely wild, bringing in everyone short of Hugh Jackman’s grandma. The main villain is none other than Robert Downey Jr. making his MCU return… as Doctor Doom. Yes, you read that right—he’s not Tony Stark, but the big-bad, cape-wearing king of Latveria.
Facing him is a mutant lineup fans thought they‘d seen the last of: Ian McKellen reprises Magneto, Patrick Stewart returns as Professor X, plus Marsden’s Cyclops, Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, and Kelsey Grammer in full blue as Beast. There’s also Channing Tatum popping in as Gambit, crossing over after that Deadpool & Wolverine cameo—so that running joke finally paid off.
Avengers: Doomsday opens in cinemas worldwide on 18 December, 2026.
The Fantastic Four roll in via Earth-828’s version, meaning Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, and Joseph Quinn are all on board. On the newer Marvel side, you’ve got the “New Avengers” team led by Florence Pugh, Wyatt Russell, Sebastian Stan, David Harbour, Hannah John-Kamen, and Lewis Pullman, plus Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, Danny Ramirez’s Falcon, Simu Liu as Shang-Chi, and Tom Hiddleston reviving Loki once again.
Wakanda gets its own delegation: Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Tenoch Huerta Mejia, and Mabel Cadena. Rounding things off, there’s still Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, and Chris Evans dusting off the shield to be Steve Rogers. If you were starting to think Marvel might slow down on the cameos, there’s your answer.
