James Gunn has addressed speculation about the DCU Batman film, clarifying that the script for The Brave and the Bold remains unfinished and that rumours of a set release date are unfounded.

James Gunn, who shares the helm at DC Studios, has poured cold water on recent speculation swirling around the next Batman instalment in the DC Universe. The project, known as The Brave and the Bold, has been the subject of much chatter, particularly regarding the state of its script and a supposed release year. Gunn, never one to let a rumour run wild, responded directly to a fan query on Threads about whether the screenplay was complete and if the film was indeed locked in for 2028. His reply was blunt:

"Fiction, sorry. Screenplay isn't finished."

Given the trickle of information about The Brave and the Bold, Gunn’s update is hardly a shock. Last July, just ahead of Superman’s release, he offered little in the way of fresh details.

"There's really no new updates,"

he remarked, adding,

"I mean, we're working on a script. We have a screenwriter who's hammering away at it. I'm very involved, and so, you know, we'll see what happens next. I wish I had more news for you, but I don't."

The film, set to be directed by Andy Muschietti, will introduce audiences to Damian Wayne as Robin, but for now, progress appears to be moving at a measured pace.

Elseworlds Returns: Pattinson’s Batman on the Horizon

While the DCU’s caped crusader remains in development limbo, fans won’t be entirely deprived of Gotham’s most famous vigilante. The Batman 2, with Robert Pattinson reprising his role and Matt Reeves once again in the director’s chair, is scheduled to hit cinemas on 1 October 2027. The cast list has grown more intriguing, with Sebastian Stan stepping in as Harvey Dent and Scarlett Johansson taking on a yet-to-be-revealed character. Colin Farrell is set to make a brief return as the Penguin, though his screen time will be limited. It’s worth noting, however, that this sequel sits firmly outside the main DCU continuity, falling under the Elseworlds banner and thus not connected to Gunn and Peter Safran’s overarching universe.

What’s Next for the DCU?

Looking ahead, the next major chapter for the DCU will be Supergirl, marking Milly Alcock’s first solo outing as Kara Zor-El. Following that, Lanterns is on the slate—a series for HBO that will shine a spotlight on the Green Lantern Corps.
