James Cameron’s ambitious five-film Avatar saga continues, but what’s next for Jake Sully and Pandora? Discover the timeline jump, plot hints, and whether Cameron will remain at the helm for Avatar 4.

James Cameron’s grand vision for the Avatar series is well underway, with three instalments already captivating audiences. Jake Sully has now made Pandora his home, started a family, and left his original clan to join the Metkayina. As anticipation builds for the next chapter, many are eager to see what direction the story will take in the fourth film.

Significant Time Leap and Production Insights

During a recent interview, Cameron disclosed that the fourth entry will be set eight years after the events of Fire and Ash. The production process for the sequels was rather unique, with The Way of Water, Fire and Ash, and portions of the next film shot concurrently. This approach was chosen to ensure the younger cast members would not visibly age out of their roles, as the actors spent a total of 18 months filming, with nine months each dedicated to the second and third films, and some scenes for the fourth already completed.

All the actors worked for 18 months. This isn’t like rocking up to a lectern, and in two days, doing an entire voice part for an animated film, Pixar animated film. Everything you see those characters do, the actors did. It took 18 months to do the two movies.

So, about nine months of capture for each film. But it was intermixed. We’d do ‘Avatar 2’ scene one day, and a ‘3’ scene the next day. Even some stuff on ‘4.’ ‘Cause all the characters jumped forward in age about eight years between the end of ‘3’ and start of ‘4.

While the original Avatar and its sequel were separated by a 15-year gap, only a few weeks pass between the second and third films. The next instalment, however, will leap forward by eight years. Early scenes are expected to show the children at their current ages, before the narrative advances to their young adulthood. Kiri will serve as the narrator, with Loak and Kiri in their early twenties, Tuk as a teenager, and Jake and Neytiri approaching middle age. The story will unfold nearly a quarter-century after the events of the first film, promising a more mature cast of characters.

Plot Speculation and Character Developments

Details regarding the storyline remain closely guarded, with no official synopsis released. However, following the conclusion of Fire and Ash, speculation abounds about the possible return of Quaritch and Varang. Quaritch’s fate is uncertain, but his recent acceptance of Na’vi culture hints at a potential shift in his character, possibly bringing his longstanding conflict with Jake to a close.

Spider’s role is likely to become more prominent, now that he can breathe unaided on Pandora. The RDA’s interest in him is unlikely to wane, especially given their penchant for exploiting new discoveries. Producer Jon Landau has hinted at broader themes, stating,

There’s overpopulation and a depletion of our natural resources that make life harder. But we don’t want to paint a bleak picture for where our world is going. The films are also about the idea of that we can change course.

This aligns with comments about the fifth film, which will reportedly see the story shift to Earth, offering Neytiri a new perspective on humanity.

Cameron’s Commitment and Studio Response

Some have questioned whether Cameron’s long-term dedication to the franchise is the best use of his creative talents. The director, however, remains unfazed, remarking,

It’s my decision, not yours.

He has also suggested he may step back from being so hands-on in future, saying,

I’ve got other stories to tell, and I’ve got other stories to tell within Avatar. What won’t happen is, I won’t go down the rabbit hole of exclusively making only Avatar for multiple years. I’m going to figure out another way that involves more collaboration. I’m not saying I’m going to step away as a director, but I’m going to pull back from being as hands-on with every tiny aspect of the process.

The studio’s reaction to the script for the next film was overwhelmingly positive, with Cameron sharing,

When I turned in the script for 4, the studio executive, creative executive over the films wrote me an email that said, ‘Holy fuck.’ And I said, ‘Well, where are the notes?’ And she said, ‘Those are the notes.’ Because it kind of goes nuts in a good way, right?

He has described the film as unpredictable, with the narrative taking unexpected turns. Whether or not the project moves forward will depend on the success of Fire and Ash, but for now, the next chapter is scheduled for release on 21 December 2029, while Fire and Ash continues its run in cinemas across the United States.
