Shaken up and starting over: Steven Knight teases James Bond 26 as a reimagined origin story, digging into how 007 became 007.

So, here we are—James Bond, pop culture’s most indestructible action brand, is currently parked in neutral. Normally, 007 never sleeps, but after Daniel Craig hung up the tux in 2021, the whole machine basically ground to a halt. I’m not just talking a breather between films either—proper, wheels-off, the-lights-are-on-but-no-one’s-home, kind of halt.

If you’re wondering what’s taking so long, you’re not alone. We’ve had six decades, 25 official films, and (get this) more than $7 billion in global box office, so you’d think Bond would have his next mission lined up by now. But no, the franchise has been locked in a bit of a shake-up. And not the good kind involving a martini.

The Big Bond Rebuild

Word has it, the pause is down to a proper structural overhaul—studio types love that phrase, but this time it actually sounds like they mean it. Amazon bought up MGM (and, by extension, Bond) which put a fresh batch of money and opinions in the mix. No more keep-calm-and-carry-on business; this is clearly Bond 2.0 territory we’re entering.

The two names leading the mission:

  • Steven Knight: Hired to write Bond 26. If you’re into TV, you’ll know him from ‘Peaky Blinders’. He’s not done a Bond before, so it’ll be interesting to see if Tommy Shelby’s swagger bleeds into MI6.
  • Denis Villeneuve: In the director’s chair, apparently. The man who gave us ‘Dune’ and ‘Arrival’. Not your typical Bond director—the last thing you’d call his films is “frivolous fun”. Expect somewhere between existential dread and very, very stylish shootouts.

What’s Next for 007?

This new run is all under the watchful eyes of Amazon MGM Studios—so, yes, Bond is truly corporate now. Whether this means he’ll start fighting cybercriminals in Silicon Valley, we’ll have to wait and see.

The one official word so far: Steven Knight is reportedly 'working closely with Denis Villeneuve to usher in a bold new era for the franchise'. Corporate speak? Maybe. But with the bar as high as it is (again, $7 billion, not that anyone’s counting), it’s probably wise they don’t rush it.

The wheels are, at last, turning—albeit quietly. No word on casting, plot, or release. But if you fancy betting on when you’ll next see a shaken (not stirred) vodka martini, maybe hold off for now.

More updates as things unfold. For now: Bond’s universe is being rebuilt from the ground up, and it’s not being done in a hurry.
