Insiders to The Deb — Rebel Wilson’s doomed directorial debut — are taking the stand in an Australian court.

Here’s a behind-the-scenes scandal that honestly outshines the plot of the movie itself. 'The Deb' was supposed to be a joyful Australian musical about country kids desperately angling for dance dates. Instead, it turned into a legal brawl featuring embezzlement accusations, claims of sexual misconduct, and some pretty public Instagram mudslinging—mostly involving Rebel Wilson and pretty much everyone else involved in making the film.

How Did Things Get Messy?

The real drama kicked off back in 2024. Rebel Wilson—who most people know as Fat Amy from 'Pitch Perfect' or as the best part of 'Bridesmaids'—unexpectedly accused the film’s producers of blocking its big premiere at Toronto. Apparently, not just a scheduling mix-up.

Wilson had some very heavy accusations: embezzlement of movie funds and 'inappropriate behavior' by producer Amanda Ghost toward the film’s lead actress, Charlotte MacInnes. What counts as inappropriate? According to Wilson’s side, Ghost allegedly made weird comments to MacInnes and even took a bath with her. (Yep, you read that right.) MacInnes denied it happened, but Wilson insisted that MacInnes only backtracked because she landed a $110,000 record deal with Atlantic Records—an offer that just so happens to tie back to Ghost’s business partner, billionaire Len Blavatnik.

Social Media Meltdown

If you thought it couldn’t get any more high school, Wilson then went after MacInnes on the official Instagram account for 'The Deb.' In May 2025, MacInnes posted a video of herself performing one of the film’s songs on Blavatnik’s private yacht. Wilson torched her for donning what she called a 'culturally inappropriate Indian outfit' and flat-out accused MacInnes of 'singing a song from a movie that will never get released because of her lies and support for the people blocking the film’s release.'

The Courtroom Sequel

Fast forward to now: Rebel Wilson is being sued for defamation in Australia by, yes, Charlotte MacInnes. The trial just opened and is expected to last over a week. Already on the witness stand: the movie’s writer (Hannah Reilly) and MacInnes’s boyfriend (Carlo Boumouglbay), who didn’t hold back.

  • Reilly testified that MacInnes confided the situation had become an 'all-consuming nightmarish force in her life,' saying the ongoing feud had 'hardened' her (which, fair enough).
  • Boumouglbay claimed MacInnes felt constantly surveilled by Wilson and genuinely unsafe, describing Wilson’s social posts as 'breaking her down.'

PR Firms, Shady Texts, and Even More Lawsuits

But wait! It gets sillier. The Guardian found out that Wilson hired a crisis PR agency to help make her harassment claims against Ghost look official. That firm, The Agency Group, wasn’t totally convinced—private texts between employees called Wilson 'f-----g nuts' and joked about making a website that would position Ghost as a 'madam.' ('Oh my god lol ok this one will be fun'—actual text a staffer sent.)

Meanwhile, the film’s producers sued Wilson in LA, arguing she was angling for a writing credit when Hannah Reilly did most of the heavy lifting on the script. For the record, Reilly wrote the original 2022 stage version and even benefited from Wilson’s own theater scholarship.

So… Did Anyone See the Actual Movie?

Despite all the corporate and personal drama, 'The Deb' finally premiered in Australia earlier this month. Reviews have actually been pretty solid, with critics saying things like 'hilarious' and 'fun, rude directorial debut.' It’s currently sitting at 84% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Of course, there’s no word yet about a US release date. Not exactly shocking after all this chaos.
