Ice Cube teams with Oscar-winning filmmaker Brian Helgeland on a new crime thriller, with fellow Academy Award winner Tommy Lee Jones aboard — a heavyweight lineup whose resumes include LA Confidential and The Fugitive.

So here’s something unexpected: Ice Cube and Tommy Lee Jones are partnering up for a new crime movie from Brian Helgeland. If those names sound slightly all-over-the-place for a project together, you’re not alone. But this is legit, and there are some heavy-hitting resumes behind it.

Who’s Making What Here?

The movie is called Outside Man. Brian Helgeland—the guy who won an Oscar for writing 'L.A. Confidential'—is both writing and directing. Tommy Lee Jones, who took home his own Academy Award for 'The Fugitive,' is set to star alongside Ice Cube.

Production-wise, Cube and Jeff Kwatinetz are running things under their Cube Vision banner, joined by Bill Gerber and Teton Ridge Entertainment’s Jillian Share and Jen Gorton. For anyone who actually tracks these credits, Ben Hurwitz from Team Cube also gets an executive producer nod.

What’s the Story?

The premise is pretty clear-cut but with potential for some classic thriller tension. Ice Cube is playing Ruben, a former Chicago mob enforcer just let out of prison. He heads to rural Texas trying to put his ugly past behind him, and winds up working for a retired Texas Ranger/furniture craftsman named Gus Wanamaker, who’ll be played by Tommy Lee Jones. These two start to form a bond—until, surprise, their old 'career paths' come knocking. Because why else would you cast Ice Cube as a mob guy and Tommy Lee Jones as a retired lawman if not to watch their worlds go sideways?

Big Names, Bigger Backgrounds

  • Tommy Lee Jones: You’ve seen him pretty much everywhere—from 'Men in Black' to 'No Country for Old Men' and 'Natural Born Killers,' not to mention the classic 'Volcano' or his more recent work in 'Finestkind' (which, by the way, was also directed by Helgeland). Beyond his Oscar win for 'The Fugitive,' he’s picked up nominations for 'JFK,' 'In the Valley of Elah,' and 'Lincoln.'
  • Ice Cube: If you came for the music, you probably stuck around for the 'Barbershop' movies, the 'Jump Street' series, 'Ride Along,' and some action in the 'XXX' universe. Cube’s been turning himself into a reliable screen presence, beyond just playing 'Ice Cube.'

The Industry Buzz

According to reports, the script—and the combo of Cube, Jones, and Helgeland—are already getting buyers plenty interested. There’s no streaming deal or release date yet, but the behind-the-scenes people are shopping the project around.

'Just when these two men think they’re out, their old lives pull them right back in. You can pretty much see Tommy Lee Jones squinting under a hat and Ice Cube squinting back.'

All jokes aside, if you want odd-couple crime thrillers with a bit of gravitas (and some old-fashioned genre DNA), this is one to keep an eye on. It’s not often you see a pairing like this, especially with a director who knows his way around morally gray storytelling.

Again, no date yet for 'Outside Man' but you’ll know as soon as it lands on a streamer, in theaters, or wherever Cube and Jones end up dishing out their Texan brand of justice.
