Wubba lubba dub dub — the multiverse's most dysfunctional grandfather-grandson duo have been at it for over a decade now, and the count keeps climbing. Here's where things stand as of July 2026.

The short answer

Nine seasons. Season 9 premiered on Adult Swim on 24 May 2026 and wraps on 26 July 2026, with 10 episodes. Across all nine seasons, 88 episodes have aired so far — 91 once season 9 finishes. And the show is already renewed through season 12.

The season-by-season shape

Rick and Morty premiered on Adult Swim on 2 December 2013, created by Justin Roiland and Dan Harmon. Season 1 ran 11 episodes; every season since has run 10. The big structural moments:

  • Seasons 1–6 (2013–2022) — Roiland voices both Rick and Morty; the show becomes Adult Swim's number one programme and wins two Emmys for Outstanding Animated Program (2018 and 2020).
  • Season 7 (2023) — Adult Swim cuts ties with Roiland in January 2023 amid domestic abuse allegations; Ian Cardoni and Harry Belden take over as Rick and Morty. Most viewers barely notice the join.
  • Season 8 (2025) — ran 25 May to 27 July 2025, bringing back Mr. Poopybutthole, Memory Rick, and Morty Jr.
  • Season 9 (2026) — airing now, streaming weekly on HBO Max and Hulu in the US.

Adult Swim's promo for the new run set the tone:

"No AI slop! Just Grade A organic slop, made by humans with real human traits like back hair and cysts."

How many more are coming?

Plenty. A 2018 mega-deal ordered 70 episodes through to season 10, and at New York Comic-Con in 2024 the show was renewed for two more on top — locking it in through season 12, which should land around 2029. Co-creator Dan Harmon said in a statement at the time:

"Nobody wants a universe without Rick and Morty. Fortunately, the list of places to go remains infinite."

Is there a movie?

Yes — finally. On 19 May 2026, Harmon confirmed a Rick and Morty film is in active development, to be helmed by veteran series director Jacob Hair. After years of "when, not if" teases from the production team, it's actually happening.

For the record: if you're starting from scratch, 88 episodes at roughly 22 minutes each works out to about 32 hours of television. Or one very committed long weekend.
