How many EastEnders episodes are there? Four decades of Walford, by the numbers
Since the first doof-doof rang out on 19 February 1985, Albert Square has racked up a number most dramas can't dream of. EastEnders has broadcast more than 7,000 episodes — the show passed the 7,000 mark in late 2024, having reached 6,902 by 2 May 2024, and adds roughly 200 more every year.
How it got there
Created by Julia Smith and Tony Holland for BBC One, the soap launched with two episodes a week. That became three in 1994 and four in 2001, which is where the schedule sits today — Monday to Thursday, half an hour a time. Forty-one years of that arithmetic gets you past 7,000 fast.
Do the sums on watch time and it gets silly: 7,000 half-hour episodes is over 3,500 hours of Walford. Watched back to back, that's roughly 145 days. Nearly five months without sleep.
The record-breakers
Some of those episodes belong to British television history:
- Christmas Day 1986 — Den serves Angie divorce papers, watched by more than 30 million people. Still the most-watched soap episode in UK history.
- The all-time chart — four EastEnders episodes sit in the top 10 most-watched British programmes ever broadcast.
- The launch — the very first episode pulled in around 17 million viewers, and the show hit number one in the ratings within eight months.
The 40th anniversary
February 2025 marked four decades of Walford, celebrated with a live episode in which viewers voted in real time on the outcome of a storyline — deciding live on air whether Denise would choose Jack or Ravi. A first for the show, and a very modern way to mark a very long run.
Will it ever stop?
No sign of it. The programme still churns out around 200 episodes a year, remains one of BBC One's flagship dramas, and has already teased storylines flashing forward to 2027. The episode counter only goes one way.
For the record: EastEnders isn't even Britain's longest-running soap — Coronation Street beat it to air by 25 years.
