How did Famous die in Power Book III: Raising Kanan — and who was behind it
For the opening episodes of Raising Kanan season 4, one question hung over South Jamaica, Queens: where is Famous? Episode 5, "The Nail That Sticks Up" (4 April 2025), answered it in the worst possible way — and the truth about who did it turned out to be uglier than any of the fan theories.
How Famous died
Shawn "Famous" Figueroa (Antonio Ortiz), Kanan's best friend since the pilot, had been missing for three months. His body was found dumped under a mattress in an abandoned building, and the police confirmed he had been tortured before he was killed. The discovery landed just as his mother arrived in Queens searching for her missing son.
Who was behind it
Not Raq. Not Unique. Not Marvin, the fan-favourite suspect. The chain of events that got Famous killed:
- The arrest — Famous had shot the stick-up kid Freddy during a robbery gone wrong; his mother found the gun and handed it to the police, and ballistics matched.
- The cooperation — under arrest, Famous agreed to assist the investigation into Detective Malcolm Howard's death.
- The tip-off — two corrupt officers on the payroll of Snaps and Pop, Kanan's genial old-school mentors (Wendell Pierce and Erika Woods), reported the news straight back to them.
- The hit — fearing that Famous's statements, and the guilt-soaked lyrics of his song "411", could lead back to them, Snaps and Pop ordered those same officers to kill him. The full reveal came in episode 8, "Street Struck" (2 May 2025).
The couple's harmless-old-heads act has always been the point. As showrunner Sascha Penn told The Hollywood Reporter in 2025:
"I don't know that everybody trusts them; I think people just don't suspect them."
The lie that nearly destroyed the family
Snaps and Pop then weaponised the murder, telling Kanan that Raq was behind it — and behind the killing of his girlfriend Krystal, who was actually shot by Pop. That lie drove the season 4 cliffhanger: Kanan holding a gun to his mother's head, a cut to black, a gunshot.
The fifth and final season, running from 12 June 2026, confirmed Raq survived — and that the war between mother and son is built on a frame-up neither of them can see.
