House of the Dragon Star Hints a New Game of Thrones Prequel Is Closer Than You Think
HBO hasn’t closed the book on another Game of Thrones prequel: House of the Dragon’s Steve Toussaint says the long-rumored Sea Snake series is still in development and teased fresh format details, even as timelines remain unclear.
Well, just when you thought HBO had run out of ways to mine Game of Thrones for new telly, there’s a fresh glimmer of life in one of the more random spin-off projects—one that’s been lurking in development limbo for yonks: the Corlys Velaryon series, about the Sea Snake himself. No, HBO hasn’t officially given it the big thumbs-up yet, but apparently, it’s nowhere near as dead as some folks might’ve thought.
The Sea Snake Won’t Sink (Yet)
Steve Toussaint, who you’ll know as Corlys Velaryon in House of the Dragon, has actually spoken out about where this spin-off stands. And if you figured that no news for this long meant curtains for the project—well, not quite. According to Toussaint, HBO’s still toying with the idea, even if no formal pick-up order has landed.
A Bit of Background
This Sea Snake show has been on the cards for a while now—since the very first season of House of the Dragon, oddly enough. Toussaint let slip this little behind-the-scenes gem in an interview with ScreenRant. While chatting about all things House of the Dragon (and the upcoming third season), the topic of the spin-off popped up. Apparently, way back during the Season 1 shoot, someone floated the idea:
'When it was mooted, when we were shooting season 1, it was mooted, and I was like, "Oh my God, that'd be great." And then I thought, "I can't play 21 again. Oh s***, it's too late." And then George [R.R. Martin] said to me, "Oh no, it'll be animated." And I was like, "Okay, great."'
The man himself seemed both surprised and kind of relieved by the “animated” idea, since, let's face it, no one wants to get CGI’d back to their 20s if a cartoon version will do the job.
Where Are We Now?
As for recent updates? Don’t get your hopes up for a rush into production. Toussaint hasn't had any big news since those early chats. But after bumping into George R.R. Martin 'just a few weeks ago', his takeaway was that the Sea Snake project’s still kicking about at HBO HQ. He hasn’t been told it’s moving ahead, but crucially, no one’s pulled the plug either.
- The project started off during House of the Dragon Season 1 filming
- It was pitched as an animated series, not live action
- No green light from HBO yet—just ongoing 'development' chat
- Toussaint will be back as Corlys in House of the Dragon Season 3, out 21 June
It’s a classic TV development saga: plenty of ideas, not much actual progress, but the door’s still (slightly) ajar. For now, Toussaint’s more certain about his return in House of the Dragon season three than any future sea-faring spin-offs.
