House of the Dragon Showrunner Hypes Battle of the Gullet as TV’s Most Audacious Episode Ever
House of the Dragon roars back next month on HBO with a season 3 premiere that dives straight into the Battle of the Gullet — and the showrunner says it could be the craziest episode of television ever made.
If you’ve been hanging on for the next volley of fire and blood from House of the Dragon, the wait’s nearly over. HBO’s dropping season 3 on 21 June, and apparently they’re not easing us in. By the sound of it, we’re getting a literal scorcher straight out the gate.
Going All-In: The Battle of the Gullet
The opener launches with the Battle of the Gullet — that’s not some forgettable clash tucked away in the lore, by the way. If you’ve been keeping up, both sides have spent two seasons bickering and skirmishing, but now it looks like we’re finally getting the full-on war. Greens vs. Blacks. Dragons, ships, sky fire, the works.
Showrunner Ryan Condal’s been practically obsessing over this one: 'To try to tell this story without doing the Gullet would be like filming Lord of the Rings and skipping the Battle of Helm’s Deep.' Which, yeah, would be criminal. It’s taken them four years to get here, apparently. Condal and his lot weren’t content with just throwing together a couple of big CGI lizards — they’ve been angling for chaos on multiple fronts, sea and sky. Proper spectacle, then.
Emma D’Arcy (Rhaenyra herself) put it like this: the new season 'starts at 60 miles an hour.' She’s not wrong — all the ugly family drama we’ve seen so far finally blows up and drags the entire realm into it. D’Arcy called it a 'very classy bit of plotting,' and honestly, I can’t disagree; it’s been a slow burn, but if they stick the landing, it’ll have been worth it.
How Long Before the Dragons Fly Off for Good?
And here’s one for the planners: HBO boss Casey Bloys recently spilled the beans — House of the Dragon will wrap up with season 4. No cliffhangers drawn out for decades, thank you very much. The story’s following the Targaryen saga to its grim conclusion, just like the books.
Bloys didn’t have details on the episode count for the end: Ryan Condal's still stuck in the edit bay with season 3 and tinkering with scripts for the finish. But rest assured, there is an endgame in sight — they’re not making this up as they go along. Fair play to them.
