House of the Dragon Season 4 Filming Window Signals When the Final Season Premieres
With Season 3 landing June 21 on HBO and Max, House of the Dragon is already locking its endgame—Season 4’s filming window is set, hinting at when the final chapter will drop, and showrunner Ryan Condal says it’s the biggest season yet.
If you thought the House Targaryen drama was anywhere close to wrapping up, hold your dragons. House of the Dragon Season 3 hasn't even hatched yet (that’s due 21 June, if you’re counting), but showrunner Ryan Condal is already plotting out Season 4 — and dropping the strongest hints so far about when we'll actually get to see it.
When's the Crew Back at Work?
Here’s the latest from Condal himself: filming for House of the Dragon Season 4 could kick off as early as spring 2027. Why not sooner? Well, it turns out the schedule is at the mercy of that famously unpredictable British weather. As Condal puts it, they have to 'straddle the British summer,' because of how much they rely on longer daylight hours. Basically, they start shooting when spring rolls around and try to get it all in before things start getting dark and miserable again. It's a bit of a logistical headache, to be fair.
'Filming is a bit beholden to the British weather, and particularly the light. We always have to straddle the British summer, which just means starting filming in the spring then wrapping before it gets dark again. And because it takes over a year to prep and then shoot the show, it just sort of slots it into this place where we are in the year.'
If they stick to that schedule, we’re realistically looking at a 2028 release date for Season 4. It actually lines up with the nearly two-year wait we’ve had between previous outings, so don’t get your hopes up for a faster turnaround.
How Big Is This Going?
If you’re expecting a scaled-back final act, sit back down. Condal says Season 4 is set to be House of the Dragon’s biggest yet. The episode count will be in line with what we’ve already had, but he dropped the word 'massive' when talking about their plans for this last run. He reckons this will be the most ambitious series they've managed to turn out — which, considering the budget and spectacle so far, is saying something.
- Season 3 debuts: 21 June 2024
- Season 4 filming: targeted for Spring 2027
- Possible release: 2028
- Episode count: similar to previous seasons
- Scale: the largest season yet, by Condal’s account
Writing While Wrapping Up
Bit of behind-the-scenes trivia — Condal is deep into penning Season 4 while the team is still putting the finishing touches on Season 3. He says it’s not ideal, but with schedules the way they are, it’s unavoidable. He called himself an 'all good things come to an end' sort, which sounds about right for someone steering Westeros to its finish line (for now).
