Brace for déjà vu: a cast tease hints House of the Dragon season 3 could repeat season 2’s biggest misstep — and that ominous buzz is circling the Battle Above the Gods Eye, the Daemon vs. Aemond showdown fans of Fire & Blood have been dying to see.

If you were hoping that 'House of the Dragon' would finally give us that spectacular, dragon-on-dragon showdown between Daemon and Aemond in Season 3—well, you might want to temper your expectations. There are rumblings, and they suggest we may be in for another round of lengthy foreplay before anyone actually unsheathes a Valyrian sword.

Matt Smith Isn’t Exactly Filling Us With Confidence

So, Matt Smith (that’s Daemon Targaryen for anyone still catching up), has been chatting to SFX magazine about what’s coming up for his fire-breathing sociopath of a character. When the Gods Eye battle was mentioned—that’s the airborne duel between Daemon and his nephew Aemond, one of the main highlights from George R. R. Martin’s 'Fire & Blood'—Smith didn’t drop any juicy spoilers. In fact, he barely seemed to know what’s in store himself.

To quote Smith direct, in all his careful vagueness:

'One assumes they’re headed there, but you never know. It’s quite present in the story, isn’t it? Even in the book, it’s been illustrated. It’s surely got to head there, but I’m not privy to the details of it until the script. But I’m going to cross my fingers too.'

Translation: He hasn’t got a clue whether we’ll see this battle any time soon, or at least he’s not allowed to say. 'Cross my fingers' is hardly a ringing promise of dragons burning each other out of the sky before the season’s out.

The Slow Burn Problem

If all of this sounds familiar, it’s because we’ve already been here before. Season 2 spent ages winding us up for the Battle of the Gullet, arguably one of Westeros’ bloodiest scraps. The problem? The pay-off never came. All that tension, and then the actual battle got shunted off to be the opener for Season 3 instead. You can see why fans might be getting a bit twitchy.

What Are the Odds for Season 3?

  • Matt Smith’s comments suggest the Gods Eye battle won’t arrive in Season 3
  • The books put this fiery aerial clash as the natural climax for Daemon and Aemond’s storyline
  • Delaying it until Season 4 risks a repeat of last season’s anticlimax—lots of build, not much bang
  • Season 4 isn’t due to land until at least 2028, which, considering the breakneck pace at which TV moves, is practically a small age in dragon years

Dragons, Deadlines, and Déjà Vu

Look, there’s always the chance Smith is being deliberately evasive, as these actors are occasionally contractually forced to do—especially when there are potential spoilers at stake. But assuming he’s on the level, it does seem the showrunners are rolling the dice again on a long build-up, with the feature battle held back for the final stretch. Given how much goodwill HBO burned through with the hasty last season of 'Game of Thrones', playing development chicken with key storylines is hardly uncharted territory, but still, not the easiest trick to pull off twice.

'House of the Dragon' Season 3 will premiere on 21 June on HBO and HBO Max.
