HBO and Warner Bros. are plotting a grand return to Westeros with a new Game of Thrones prequel film, and Henry Cavill’s name is swirling around the lead role. Could this be the comeback he needs?

With A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms set to keep the Game of Thrones universe ticking along, HBO and Warner Bros. appear to be quietly assembling something rather more ambitious. The next chapter, Aegon’s Conquest, is rumoured to be in the works, focusing on the legendary King Aegon I Targaryen’s campaign to unite Westeros. Announced back in 2024, the project quickly sparked a flurry of fan enthusiasm, with many championing Henry Cavill as the ideal choice for the Targaryen conqueror.

Since then, news on the prequel’s progress has been thin on the ground. However, recent whispers suggest Warner Bros. is eyeing a feature-length adaptation, with HBO developing the story as a potential drama series. The ambition? To deliver a cinematic spectacle on par with Dune—a proper epic, not just another television spin-off.

The Case for a Cinematic Epic

Aegon’s campaign to bring six of the seven kingdoms under his rule (with Dorne famously holding out) is tailor-made for the big screen. The scale, the dragons, the political intrigue—there’s plenty to tempt audiences back to the cinema. With Denis Villeneuve’s Dune trilogy drawing to a close, there’s a gap for another sweeping saga, and George R.R. Martin’s world is nothing if not rich in lore and spectacle.

For context, Dune and its sequel have both enjoyed critical and commercial success, with the first film scoring 8.0/10 on IMDb and 83% on Rotten Tomatoes, while the follow-up managed 8.4/10 and an impressive 92%. The appetite for grand, immersive storytelling clearly hasn’t waned.

Game of Thrones: A Franchise in Flux

Despite the cultural juggernaut that was Game of Thrones, the final series left a rather mixed legacy. House of the Dragon has fared reasonably well, but hasn’t quite recaptured the original’s magic. There’s a sense that a film adaptation, handled with the same care as Dune, could restore some of that lost lustre.

The story of Aegon I Targaryen, in particular, offers a fresh angle—familiar enough to draw in long-time fans, but distinct enough to stand on its own. If the production values match the ambition, it could well become the next must-see event in fantasy cinema.

Henry Cavill: In Need of a Hit?

Henry Cavill’s recent run at the box office has been, to put it mildly, a bit underwhelming. Since his departure from The Witcher and the DCEU, he’s struggled to find a project that truly clicks with audiences. The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare and Argylle failed to set tills ringing, and his last major success remains Mission: Impossible – Fallout back in 2018.

Some have pointed to a lack of high-profile roles as the culprit. While Chad Stahelski’s Highlander reboot could change his fortunes, the prospect of Cavill donning Targaryen armour for a Game of Thrones film is, for many, a far more tantalising prospect. Whether he’ll actually land the part is anyone’s guess—the project is still in its early days, with Mattson Tomlin (co-writer of The Batman: Part II) reportedly penning scripts as of July 2025.

What Lies Ahead for Westeros?

For now, fans will have to content themselves with the imminent arrival of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which is tipped for a strong run, and the third series of House of the Dragon later in the year. As for Cavill’s potential involvement in Aegon’s Conquest, it remains a matter of speculation. Still, the prospect of a Game of Thrones film on a grand scale is enough to set imaginations racing.
