Henry Cavill’s Sherlock Holmes comeback just got a bold new twist
Henry Cavill’s Sherlock may be sticking around beyond Enola Holmes. Newcomer Himesh Patel is pushing for a straight-up Holmes-and-Watson adventure next, hinting at a classic detective duo run for Cavill’s Baker Street sleuth.
If you thought Henry Cavill was finished with Sherlock Holmes after the Enola Holmes films, it might be time to think again. One of the newer faces in the franchise, Himesh Patel, has just dropped an intriguing little tease about what he would like to tackle next—and it is a bit of a crowd-pleaser for anyone craving a throwback to the classic detective duo, rather than teen sleuth antics.
A Proper Sherlock and Watson Adventure?
Himesh Patel—who you might remember slipped in as Dr John Watson with almost blink-and-you’ll-miss-it subtlety in the second film—recently spoke to Screen Rant about where he wants the Netflix series to head. The more he described it, the clearer it became that Patel is absolutely up for a classic Sherlock and Watson story, paired properly alongside Cavill’s Holmes for a good old-fashioned mystery. Here’s what he had to say:
'I would just want to spend more time with him. I’d love to do a classic Sherlock-Watson story with him. That’d be a lot of fun. I think he’s a fantastic actor. He seems like a lovely guy in the time I’ve spent with him. But what he’s done with what you see of Sherlock in this movie is really special, and I really would love to spend more time with Henry and tell a thrilling story.'
Fair play to him. While Watson finally gets some proper screen time in Enola Holmes 3 (he was essentially a cameo before), the actual Sherlock-Watson dynamic is still missing in action. The twist this time? Sherlock spends most of the film kidnapped, so the two barely get a scene together. A bit of a wasted opportunity if you ask me.
Where Enola Holmes 3 Leaves Things
- Himesh Patel debuts properly as Watson, but has minimal interaction with Henry Cavill’s Sherlock
- The story takes Enola (Millie Bobby Brown) far from London into new territory, with her personal life colliding hard with her work
- Sherlock, meanwhile, is held captive for a good chunk of it—hardly the best way to build up the iconic partnership
- Philip Barantini directed the third film
- Netflix is streaming all three Enola Holmes entries if you fancy a catch up
What Next for Cavill’s Holmes?
The fact that Patel is openly angling for more time with Cavill’s Sherlock is a decent sign we could see the franchise branch out from its junior spinoff roots. Let’s be honest: enough people want to see Cavill and Patel team up for a proper Holmes and Watson case, and the demand is only getting louder. For now, though, the ball is in Netflix’s court.
