Announced ages ago, this series promises to retell the entire saga, chapter by chapter, reimagining the Hogwarts years with a new cast—while sticking far closer to the books. Think of it as the chance for all those cut subplots and characters to finally have their moment, though whether that actually makes for better television is, frankly, still up for debate.

More Book, Less Streamlining

Let’s be honest, the original films had to blitz through quite a lot—whole characters and plotlines vanished in the name of run time. But HBO seem dead set on being far more loyal to the books, if the early teasers are anything to go by. It looks like we’ll get more of the everyday weirdness and the background oddballs of Hogwarts itself—plus a proper look at characters who barely got a word in edgewise before (yes, you, Lavender Brown and co.). For Potter obsessives who’ve always wanted to see these stories ‘done right’, this is a proper treat.

But with that, you get the baggage too. Most worrying: the show is already showing hints in the trailer that it's planting seeds for the awkward love triangle from Half-Blood Prince—the ‘Ron, Hermione, Lavender’ business that always felt a bit forced to begin with. Even back in the films and books, this particular subplot landed somewhere between slapstick and cringe. Ron, for reasons never entirely convincing, ends up snogging Lavender through most of Year Six, while everyone—including us—knows it was always heading for disaster. Cue jealousy, on-the-nose nicknames, and a string of rather obvious scenes where poor Hermione’s left to glower in the corner.

Season 1 Already Planting Romance Seeds?

Now, Harry and the gang are still a bit too young for hormones in Year One, but the new trailer goes out of its way to introduce Lavender early on. We see her as one of the first people Hermione meets on the Hogwarts Express, and she immediately stands out in a bit of banter about summer homework ('There was summer reading?'). It's a good bit of comic relief, but also a clear sign the writers are giving her more than passing attention this time.

She pops up again later in the teaser, fretting about the Sorting Hat like it’s the most stressful thing on earth—a relatable mood. Honestly, it's nice seeing side characters get fleshed out, and it suggests this version really will let the more minor players take up actual space at Hogwarts, not just in the background of big battle scenes. My only worry: will shining an early spotlight on Lavender just be groundwork for the love triangle drama further down the line, rather than making her a character worth following in her own right?
