HBO’s Harry Potter series has cast Peter Serafinowicz as Peeves

Here’s one to make longtime Harry Potter fans do a bit of a double take: Warner Bros. and HBO Max (or whatever rebranding exercise it’s up to this week) have cast Peter Serafinowicz as Peeves the Poltergeist for the new Harry Potter series. Yes, you read that correctly – we’re finally getting Peeves on screen, and not just as a deleted scene from 20 years ago.

The Poltergeist Problem

Now, if you only know Harry Potter from the films, you might be raising an eyebrow and asking, 'Who’s Peeves?' That’s fair – Chris Columbus and co never actually put him in. Across all eight movies, the mischievous ghost was unceremoniously left out, even though he’s a staple of all seven of J.K. Rowling’s original books. The one time he was filmed (played back then by Rik Mayall), his scenes ended up on the cutting room floor, never to see daylight. The result: Peeves is a bit of a deep cut for casual fans, but a real icon for book readers and wizarding weirdos everywhere.

Who’s Playing Him?

Enter Peter Serafinowicz. You might know him as the voice of Darth Maul (the ‘at last we will have revenge’ guy) or from one of about a hundred British comedies. Now he’s set to raise merry hell as Hogwarts’ resident supernatural menace. If you’re unfamiliar, Peeves is basically Hogwarts’ answer to a very noisy child after four Red Bulls – a chaos agent who’s been haunting the castle for something like a millennium, armed with a love of pranks and absolutely no respect for authority.

Why Now?

The fresh Harry Potter TV adaptation is supposed to be much more faithful to the source material, which might explain why characters like Peeves are finally getting their dues. HBO Max and Warner Bros. are clearly leaning hard on making this a ‘for the fans’ sort of event – and in fairness, it’s about time the chaos poltergeist got a bit of screentime, instead of just living in the margins.

So, if you’ve been waiting decades to see Peeves lob chalk at teachers and terrorise first-years with limericks, it looks like the upcoming Harry Potter series might finally deliver.
