Deborah spends the season chasing legacy and nails it, but a victory lap with Ava in the Hacks season 5 finale swerves into an emotional reckoning that could change everything.

If you thought Hacks couldn’t pack in any more curveballs, the Season 5 finale begs to differ. If you’re up to date, you’ll know Deborah Vance and her sparring partner (and emotional support human) Ava have been through their fair share of disasters and comebacks. But this time, their journey goes places that aren’t just geographically complicated—they’re genuinely a bit of a gut-punch.

The Grand European Detour (And What Sparks It)

Picking up after Deborah’s record-smashing gig in Central Park, she decides to whisk Ava off to Europe. You’d think this was a well-earned victory holiday, some champagne and handbags sort of thing. For a minute, that’s exactly how it feels. Nice change of scenery, Parisian bread that apparently counts as ‘real bread’ by Deborah’s standards, Ava being dragged round Paris flea markets. All very wholesomely sitcom-y, until, well—it isn’t.

The Diagnosis That Changes Everything

Here’s where things take a sharp left: Deborah confesses she’s got a new health issue. Remember the mass doctors removed earlier? It’s back, and it’s spread. No sugar-coating, and not much warning for Ava either—it lands like a slap. And it’s not just the diagnosis that stings; Deborah lays out her plan—no treatment. Instead, she wants to swing by Zurich after they’re done with Paris and check herself into an assisted dying clinic.

Ava, naturally, is floored. She’s 100% against this, makes her views known, and starts desperately Googling new treatments. But Deborah’s mind? Made up. She’s not having any of it.

The Paris Interlude

Despite the elephant in the room, they do the Paris thing: Ava drags Deborah to a club, Deborah teaches Ava the art of haggling in a Paris flea market, and there’s a genuine attempt to try and savour whatever time they have left. There’s warmth, some vintage banter, and that sense their odd couple act is looming towards the finish line.

Deborah to Ava: 'Real bread, kid. That stuff they try to pass off in L.A. isn’t bread, it’s a suggestion.'

The Zurich Decision

By the time they’re waiting for the train to Zurich, Ava hasn’t given up. She throws one last campaign at convincing Deborah to change her mind, but Deborah’s stubbornness is on full display. What you get is less tragedy, more two mates ribbing each other about mortality—dark humour dialled way up, as they’ve always done.

Deborah scribbles down a final joke, then literally chases after Ava. It’s a callback to their entire relationship—equal parts competition and camaraderie.

Meanwhile, Back in L.A...

On the sunnier but not exactly happier West Coast, Jimmy and Kayla get their own subplot. They do some actual detective work and discover that Michael—the Latitude agency boss—has been cashing in on dead clients by selling their likeness and voices to AI companies. Extremely on-brand for this era. Jimmy and Kayla don’t just wag their fingers; they basically strongarm him into handing over the controls to the company.

How It All Ends

  • Deborah and Ava end up linking arms and strolling down the Las Vegas Strip, a nice reminder that, for all the career baggage and looming mortality, their friendship is at the heart of the show.
  • Jimmy and Kayla land a rare win against their own boss, exposing him and seizing the business reins.

If you want to relive all the tear-jerking, side-eying, and occasionally chaotic antics, every episode from seasons 1–5 is up on HBO Max.
