Game of Thrones and Blue Lights actor Michael Patrick has died at 35 after a 2023 motor neurone disease diagnosis. The Ireland-born theatre star was also known as Michael Patrick Campbell.

Here's a tough one from the world of UK theater and TV: Michael Patrick, a talented actor with a cult following for several reasons (and yes, one of those is Game of Thrones), has died at just 35. If you haven't heard his name before, you're not alone -- a lot of his best work happened on stage, not on your binge list. But there's more to his story than a small TV part, and frankly, it deserves some real attention.

Stage Guy, Screen Face

Michael Patrick (sometimes credited as Michael Patrick Campbell) was originally from Ireland and started out in theater, where he really made his mark. Even though his on-screen résumé looks short, he actually managed to squeeze in some notable TV credits:

  • Game of Thrones: He played one of the Wildling Rioters—blink and you'll miss him, but fans did notice, and honestly, you needed real presence to make your mark with that little screentime.
  • This Town: Patrick showed up in Steven Knight's recent BBC drama.
  • Blue Lights: He also popped up in this police drama, again proving that his face (and, let's be real, his ginger hair) is tougher to forget than you'd expect.

But let's be clear: Michael Patrick wasn't chasing TV spotlight. His heart was in theater, and he put most of his energy there—even, incredibly, in the last phase of his life.

Illness and Final Curtain Call

Patrick was diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) in early 2023. It's a brutal condition—think ALS, the illness that made headlines with Stephen Hawking and the Ice Bucket Challenge—but Patrick handled it in a way that was, by every account, nothing short of remarkable.

After getting the diagnosis, he actually starred in a production of The Tragedy of Richard III. Here's the wild part: in this version, his character also had MND. That isn't just smart casting; that's a gut-punch of meta theatricality most of us would never attempt, let alone pull off.

Remembered With Love (and Food, and Drink)

Patrick spent his last days in the Northern Ireland Hospice. His wife, Naomi, broke the news on Instagram—he died on April 7 after about ten days in hospice, surrounded by friends and family. Her words say it better than I ever could, so here's a key part of her tribute:

'Words can't describe how broken-hearted we are. It's been said more than once that Mick was an inspiration to everyone who was privileged enough to come into contact with him, not just in the past few years during his illness but in every day of his life. He lived a life as full as any human can live. Joy, abundance of spirit, infectious laughter. A titan of a ginger haired man.'

Naomi ended her post quoting one of Patrick's favorites from Brendan Behan: 'The most important things to do in the world are to get something to eat, something to drink and somebody to love you.' Her advice? 'Don't overthink it. Eat. Drink. Love.'

So, yeah—Michael Patrick might not have headlined TV, but if you care at all about actors who make their worlds a little more interesting, he's a name worth knowing.
