Gina Carano Weighs An MMA Comeback After The Mandalorian Exit: Here's Where She Stands
Five years after her Mandalorian firing, Gina Carano is gearing up for an MMA comeback — and she’s opening up about the fire fueling her return after big-screen turns in Fast & Furious 6 and Deadpool.
Gina Carano's career path has been anything but boring—acting gigs, public controversy, a high-profile firing, and now, she’s lacing up the gloves again to step back into MMA. If you’ve only known her as Cara Dune from 'The Mandalorian', or maybe caught her in 'Fast & Furious 6' or 'Deadpool', you’re about to get a reminder that this isn’t her first time in the cage.
The Road from Star Wars to the Ring
Let’s rewind a bit. Carano was riding high with her role as Cara Dune—easily one of the more recognizable characters in the first two seasons of Disney+’s 'The Mandalorian'. But things went off the rails after a string of controversial social media posts got her fired by Disney. Her comments touched everything from COVID-19 masks, to American politics (including an eyebrow-raising Nazi Germany comparison), to 2020 election issues—and the backlash was pretty much instant.
After getting shown the door at Lucasfilm, she filed a lawsuit. The details haven’t exactly been shouted from the rooftops, but that lawsuit’s since been settled and everyone’s moved on—at least legally.
Back to Her Roots
Now, five years post-Disney firing, Carano is getting back to what she was doing before Hollywood found her: throwing punches for real. She’s officially returning to MMA, set to face Ronda Rousey on May 16.
Leading up to the fight, Carano’s been pretty candid about why she’s climbing back in the ring and how she’s feeling about the whole comeback thing:
"The last couple of years were a bit tough. And now my family looks at me and says, 'You look healthy again.' And my mom was like, 'Are you going to do this? You have to make a decision, yes or no. And if you do it, you do it 100%.'"
In classic fighter fashion, Carano says stepping back into the cage is how she feels most herself: "When I enter the ring, all of the impurities and bullshit goes away. I missed this feeling, and I think the people that care about me know how precious this is to get back to myself after losing myself for so long."
She also points out something a lot of newer fans don’t realize—she was a fighter before she was ever on screen: "A lot of people only know me as an actor, and then they find out I’m a fighter. And Ronda’s been so gracious to reintroduce me to the world. So it’s really cool to have that recognized. I think that you’re going to see the best of me. I really feel you’re going to see the best version of me."
