Gal Gadot and Isla Fisher Team Up With Pete Davidson in Retitled Thriller: Plot Details Inside
Doug Liman rebrands his thriller as Bitcoin, adds Gal Gadot and Isla Fisher to a lineup with Casey Affleck and Pete Davidson, and pulls back the curtain on the high-stakes plot.
Alright, so Doug Liman’s next thriller — the one that was floating around as 'Killing Satoshi' — has a brand new name: 'Bitcoin.' Not exactly cryptic, but given what the movie’s about, I guess subtlety left the chat.
Here’s what’s going on: Liman, who’s got serious credit from movies like 'Edge of Tomorrow' and 'The Bourne Identity,' is digging into the bizarre real-world saga of a guy who claims to be Satoshi Nakamoto, the supposed mastermind behind Bitcoin. Think 'The Social Network,' but instead of Harvard dorm rooms and coding marathons, we get international paranoia, life-and-death stakes, and, naturally, a guy called Satoshi who may or may not even exist.
The Cast: A Mix That’ll Raise Eyebrows
- Gal Gadot is signed on to play Charlotte 'Lotte' Miller. No extra clues on what her character actually does in this whole crypto-madness, but hey, it’s Gal Gadot, so someone’s in trouble.
- Isla Fisher is onboard too, but for now her role’s under wraps. Make of that what you will.
- Pete Davidson is playing Calvin Ayre, which, for anyone who follows crypto-poker, is actually a real guy — a notorious online gambling and Bitcoin entrepreneur. So yes, Pete Davidson will have opinions about Bitcoin, money, and probably basic hygiene.
- Casey Affleck steps in as Craig Wright, which again is a real dude — the Australian computer scientist who’s been loudly insisting for years that he’s Satoshi.
A couple of fun sidenotes: this flick brings Gadot and Fisher back together for the first time since they rolled around in 'Keeping Up With the Joneses' back in 2016. Also, Liman and Casey Affleck just worked together on 'The Instigators,' so expect at least some inside jokes on set. Or at the very least, mutual respect for well-crafted chaos.
The Plot: Wild Stuff, Even If You Know Nothing About Bitcoin
The movie follows one guy’s desperate bid to convince the world — or maybe just himself — that he actually created Bitcoin. As you’d expect, this sends rich tech overlords, global leaders, and assorted billionaires scrambling into action, all apparently ready to spend eye-watering amounts of cash to shut him down. The stakes? Basically the entire world’s financial system, if you take the script seriously.
'Why do the world’s most powerful people want to erase one man, and why would they spend hundreds of millions of dollars to do it?'
Honestly, if you’ve ever wanted to see Gal Gadot, Pete Davidson, Isla Fisher, and Casey Affleck running around in a thriller about crypto, this is literally the only chance you’ll ever get.
Production Status & Who’s Behind The Scenes
Shooting kicked off at the end of February, so we’re already in motion here. The producers are Ryan Kavanaugh and Lawrence Grey — names you’ve probably seen on a bunch of mid-budget thrillers and crowd-pleasers — and the screenplay is by Nick Schenk, who’s previously written some pretty watchable stuff like 'Gran Torino,' 'The Judge,' and Clint Eastwood’s 'The Mule.' Liman at the helm means we’ll likely get some sharp action and, if we’re honest, at least one unnecessarily elaborate chase sequence.
So there you go: 'Bitcoin' looks to be the rare movie that tries to bring the real-life chaos of crypto to the big screen, with a cast that’s almost random enough to work. Stay tuned for more — if nothing else, someone’s ego is getting liquidated by the end of this thing.
