After a long wait, screenwriter Zak Penn has finally explained why Ryan Reynolds’ Free Guy 2 is taking its time — and it isn’t quite what you’d expect.

If you were hoping for some movement on Free Guy 2, here’s the latest: it’s still not happening any time soon. Turns out, the hold-up isn’t a disaster behind the scenes or anyone getting cold feet financially. The truth is much less dramatic, but interesting in a Hollywood sort of way.

Not Exactly in a Rush

Zak Penn, who wrote the first film, has finally shed some actual light on why the sequel’s still parked in the garage. In a recent chat with The Direct, he explained that it’s not some production problem or endless studio wrangling, but a conscious decision made by the creative heads—namely Shawn Levy and Ryan Reynolds. After the original film turned out to be a full-on hit, they decided not to rush headlong into making another one just because it brought in a boatload at the box office. Instead, they wanted to let it breathe and try avoiding the usual Hollywood mistake of churning out disappointing sequels straight after the cash starts rolling in.

Here’s how Zak Penn put it in his own words during that interview, when asked if the film was still alive at all:

I think Shawn and Ryan [Reynolds] felt really good about the movie and felt like they didn’t want to rush into a sequel because they thought it worked for what it is… I wish I could give you an update, but I’m not sure.

It’s an approach you don’t actually hear that often in the business, but it does make sense.

That Whole Barbie Situation

Just to complicate matters, Shawn Levy echoed a similar sentiment last year in conversation with Collider. Besides wanting a reason to exist that’s better than ‘First one made money, so here we go again,’ Levy pointed out the arsenal of movies that have already planted their flags in the whole ‘fictional character becomes self-aware’ territory. Barbie in particular, which dropped after the first Free Guy, made a real splash with that same basic concept, so the team behind the sequel doesn’t want to turn up looking like copycats, or just working through trope leftovers. Levy was straight that Free Guy 2 will only happen if they can make something that feels genuinely fresh and different—both from the first movie and the rest of the pack.

The Original Free Guy

For those who need a refresher, Free Guy premiered back in 2021 and was a surprise breakout, doing impressively well at cinemas worldwide—even with all the pandemic chaos at the time.

Free Guy arrived in 2021 and became a major box office success worldwide.
