Five years after that cursed sword, Kit Harington finally says where the Black Knight stands

Remember Kit Harington popping up in Eternals, looking moody and staring at a suspiciously cursed sword? That quick post-credits bit got fans properly wound up for his transformation into the Black Knight, especially after Marvel threw in Mahershala Ali's Blade as a voice cameo. Well, here we are, five years later, and the Black Knight is still nowhere to be seen. Classic Marvel, really.

No Plans in Sight

Let's recap. Harington played Dane Whitman in Eternals, which was meant to introduce all sorts of new cosmic threads, but the film itself seriously split opinion and barely lit the box office on fire. That post-credits sequence? Suppose it was meant to be a teaser—that's all it ever became. Dane goes to touch the Ebony Blade, a voice-off chastises him (that turned out to be Blade, by the way), hinting at mystical team-ups or all-new morally-ambiguous heroics. That was supposed to be Harington's big MCU springboard. Instead, Marvel put nearly every Eternals plotline on ice, and nobody at the studio has so much as mentioned Black Knight in public since.

Recently, MovieWeb put the obvious question to Harington directly: are you actually coming back? His answer didn’t dance around the subject, but don’t get your hopes up:

Here's what Harington told MovieWeb about the Black Knight's chances for a return:

"I mean, I’d love to. I don’t think there’s any plan to. I hate to break it to you, but I think he’s a wicked character. There’s a part of him, that whole Ebony Blade stuff, where the more he kills, the worse he gets, the more addicted. I think he’s such a great parable of addiction. And I think he’s someone who starts good, goes bad. I think he’s great. But we’ll see. I don’t know if there’s any plan."

Fandom in Limbo, Harington Still Game

Obviously, fans haven’t taken this well—most wanted to see Harington dig into the Black Knight’s tortured backstory. It would have fit him, honestly, especially with the whole cursed sword angle and that downward spiral into darkness the comics are known for. Marvel’s comics legacy for Dane Whitman is complicated, involving inherited family curses and a blade that corrupts with every swing. You get the idea: sort of a brooding, supernatural Moon Knight meets Game of Thrones thing, which is the most “Kit Harington” pitch imaginable.

Could they always change their minds? Of course—Marvel’s multiverse shenanigans resurrect forgotten plotlines every other film. But unless someone at Marvel Studios has a secret Black Knight script locked away for Phase Seven or whatever, don’t hold your breath waiting for Harington to dust off that sword.
