John Boyega just reignited hope for Finn’s future in Star Wars, saying a comeback could still be on the table and offering the clearest update yet on the sequel trilogy hero’s next chapter.

If you’ve kept half an eye on the never-ending carousel of Star Wars news (congrats, you’re a braver soul than most), you’ll know that fans have been speculating for years about whether John Boyega might ever suit up as Finn again. Well, we finally got an update—and it’s just cryptic enough to keep the rumor mill grinding.

Boyega Picks Up the Comlink

Here’s the scoop: At MEGACON Orlando, someone in the audience piped up and asked John Boyega about possibly returning as Finn. Pretty standard con stuff. The slightly unexpected bit? Boyega’s answer—

'I actually have, actually.'

Yep, he says he’s already been in contact with Dave Filoni. For those who don’t keep track of Lucasfilm’s constantly shifting org chart, Filoni is now president and Chief Creative Officer. So yeah, the top guy.

Of course, Boyega didn’t go into detail—no leaks about meetings, scripts, or even so much as whether they dined over blue milk and chicken nuggets. Still, just the fact that Boyega is openly saying he’s talked to Filoni is a much less cagey answer than we usually get from actors in this galaxy.

Bigger Than Streaming?

Not long ago, Boyega was pretty firm about the only way he’d want to return as Finn. Back at Liverpool Comic Con in November, someone brought up the idea of him and Oscar Isaac (Poe Dameron) coming back together. His answer? The duo’s bromance is big-screen or bust. Literally, he said:

'Me and Oscar are very stubborn and we believe the bromance should only be on the big screen.'

Translation: Don’t expect Finn showing up on some random Disney+ series. If Boyega comes back, he wants to do it the old-fashioned way—at the movies, not just on a streaming episode buried between animated shorts and Baby Yoda memes.

Why This Gets Fans Buzzing

  • Boyega says he’s chatted with Dave Filoni, which is the most direct hint of anything happening behind the scenes so far.
  • He’s doubled down on only wanting to return to Star Wars if it’s on the big screen (so probably not in one of those overflow Disney+ projects).
  • The timing is interesting—Lucasfilm is finally putting out a new theatrical Star Wars movie again later this year ('The Mandalorian & Grogu'), after years focusing almost exclusively on TV.

For now, though, Lucasfilm hasn’t made any official announcement about Finn’s return. Still, it’s a step up from the usual 'never say never' PR answers.

If anything actually gets greenlit, I’m sure we’ll all know—these things never stay quiet for long. Until then, at least we have the pleasure of speculating wildly. May the polite but mysteriously vague actor quotes be with you.
