Anya Taylor-Joy fronts Lucky, a seven-part crime miniseries dropping on Apple TV this summer.

Anya Taylor-Joy is officially heading back to miniseries land, and honestly, this line-up is shaping up to be a bit of telly you’ll want on your summer calendar. Her new series is 'Lucky', a slick crime thriller on Apple TV, and given what we’ve seen since 'The Witch', Taylor-Joy operating in high-stakes mode is always entertaining—needless to say, I’m in.

The Premise: (Mostly) Everyone’s a Criminal

'Lucky' is adapted from Marissa Stapley’s 2021 bestselling novel, but make no mistake, this is not your typical heist drama. Here, Taylor-Joy is Luciana ‘Lucky’ Armstrong, a former criminal who’s finally escaped her past and is trying to go straight. Obviously, this wouldn’t be a TV thriller if things stayed that simple. She gets dragged back in for one last job—a classic trope, but with a modern spin. Why? Because the mob boss demanding her return happens to be her mother-in-law. Yes, it’s every family dinner gone wrong, taken to the absolute extreme.

So, Lucky is up against Priscilla Matheson (played by none other than Annette Bening), who’s determined to recover the money Lucky nicked from her and her old flame Whitaker (William Fichtner). To further complicate the family tree, Lucky is married to Priscilla’s son, Cary (Drew Starkey), and had a life of crime drilled into her by her own father, John Armstrong (Timothy Olyphant at his shifty best). Throw in the FBI (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor, Mo McRae) and Priscilla’s overzealous henchman Dutch (Clifton Collins Jr), and Lucky is well and truly surrounded.

Cast List – If You Blink, You’ll Miss a Star

  • Anya Taylor-Joy: Luciana 'Lucky' Armstrong (lead + executive producer)
  • Annette Bening: Priscilla Matheson (mob boss, mother-in-law)
  • Timothy Olyphant: John Armstrong (Lucky’s criminal father)
  • William Fichtner: Whitaker (Priscilla’s old flame, ex-crime partner)
  • Drew Starkey: Cary Matheson (the son Lucky married)
  • Clifton Collins Jr: Dutch (Priscilla’s henchman)
  • Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor: FBI Agent Billie Rand
  • Mo McRae: FBI Agent Eli Gates

No lack of pedigree on the creative side, either. Jonathan Tropper—best known for ultra-pulpy action on 'Banshee' and 'Warrior'—created the show, writes the first episode, and then hands off to a writing team for the rest. The directors? Jonathan Van Tulleken (recently, 'Shogun'), Jet Wilkinson ('The Testaments'), and Greg Yaitanes ('House of the Dragon')—they’re splitting the directing duties and frankly, it should be proper cinematic.

Air Dates and How to Actually Watch It

The whole thing debuts on Apple TV on Wednesday 15 July 2026. The streamer’s sticking to the usual: two episodes drop on launch day, with the rest landing one-per-week every Wednesday, always at the deeply inconvenient 3:00 AM ET/12:00 AM PT slot. So for those keeping score:

Early Take: Taylor-Joy With a Side of Mayhem

If your tastes lean towards intense character drama, dysfunctional families, and antagonists who could ruin anyone’s night, it looks like 'Lucky' could tick all boxes. You get Anya Taylor-Joy showing off her range, Annette Bening as the mother-in-law from hell, and a perfect supporting cast nipping at Lucky’s heels at every turn—no points for guessing there will be twists. The action pedigree behind the scenes ought to keep things exciting for the entire run.
