House of the Dragon’s Season 3 finale flips what you thought about the dragon war — and finally gives the exact tally on each side before final season.

Well, that was a finale and a half, wasn’t it? If you thought you knew where the infamous dragon war in House of the Dragon was headed after Season 2, the series just tore all those assumptions to shreds. The Season 3 ender finally put hard numbers on the most-argued point among viewers: how many dragons each side actually has coming into the bloody endgame.

Team Black enters Season 4 with six dragons, while Team Green is down to four, and neither side is exactly stable.

The Latest Dragon Headcount

Let’s break it down as the new lines are drawn. Team Green has got a grand total of four dragons to its name as Season 4 kicks off. Vhagar is still stuck to Aemond Targaryen like glue, Sunfyre rides again after a resurrection no one saw coming (with Aegon back astride), Silverwing is now the wind beneath Ulf the White’s very unreliable wings, and Tessarion stays with Daeron Targaryen. Of course, this is ‘on paper’ only — Ulf and Daeron are barely holding it together after the utter chaos at Tumbleton, so you can file that under ‘provisional.’

On the other side, Team Black is technically in a stronger position, at least in dragon numbers. Rhaenyra’s got Syrax, Daemon is all about Caraxes, and Baela is with Moondancer. Addam of Hull controls Seasmoke, Hugh Hammer is now Vermithor’s rider, and Joffrey Velaryon claims Tyraxes, but the problem is Tyraxes is more lapdog than war beast at this point—still too small to make a difference.

  • Sheepstealer (Rhaena Targaryen's dragon) is officially neutral, not picking sides.
  • Dreamfyre is up for grabs too, after Helaena’s tragic demise left the dragon without a rider.

Why Ulf the White Might Not Be Long for This World

Now, about that loose cannon: Ulf the White. After his drunken, last-minute showing at Tumbleton and a double-cross that left nearly everyone furious, his odds of surviving Season 4 aren’t looking great. He switched allegiances when Rhaenyra and Daemon treated him poorly, but don’t get the wrong idea—he was just as happy torching Ormund Hightower and a bunch of bystanders, too. The man operates on self-interest, not loyalty, which means both sides are now actively considering him as the next problem to be solved (read: eliminated).

The upshot: Ulf’s got no friends, no allies, and the only thing keeping him alive is the fact that Silverwing is a very big, very angry dragon. But that’s precisely what makes both of them likely targets as the war reaches its most ruthless phase.

So as the show barrels into its final season, both the dragon count and the shifting alliances are wobblier than they’ve ever been. Whatever tally you had chalked on the wall after last season, you can throw it out.
