Erika Eleniak Makes Waves With Return to the Baywatch Reboot
The actor who headlined the first three seasons of the beach-inspired drama is making waves again.
Just when you thought we’d left slow-motion beach running behind in the '90s, 'Baywatch' is making a comeback on TV. But this isn’t just another generic reboot – the new show is actually bringing back some familiar lifeguards for one last swim.
'Baywatch' Revisted: Yes, They're Bringing OG Cast Back
First up: Erika Eleniak is returning as Shauni McClain. If you’re a deep-cut ‘Baywatch’ watcher, you’ll remember she was on deck for the show’s first three seasons before riding off into the sunset (or, you know, moving on to movies like ‘Under Siege’ and ‘The Beverly Hillbillies’). Last time we saw Shauni, she was saving people from riptides—this time, she’s a Santa Monica city councilwoman. (Insert your own “from saving beaches to running them” joke here.)
Eleniak’s character will have some scenes with Stephen Amell, who’s playing Hobie Buchannon—the son of the OG head lifeguard Mitch Buchannon (David Hasselhoff, of course). Now, Amell isn’t new to iconic genre roles (thanks, ‘Arrow’), but in this universe, he’s organizing the annual “Beach Games” event—think lifeguard Olympics, but probably with more abs and less sunscreen.
More Returns: Old Favorites and Questionable Cameos
Erika isn’t the only original cast member making a return trip to the sand. David Chokachi (who played Cody Madison, a lifeguard from the seasons where the board shorts kept getting shorter) is also confirmed to be back.
Beyond the returning faces, the new ‘Baywatch’ cast is… well, exactly what you’d expect from a brand built on six-packs and Instagram. We’re talking rising actors and social media personalities: Jessica Belkin, Shay Mitchell, Hassie Harrison, Thaddeus LaGrone, Brooks Nader, Noah Beck, and Livvy Dunne. If you don’t know some of those names, don’t worry—the algorithm does.
From Hasselhoff to Momoa (and a Little Bit of The Rock)
- David Hasselhoff was essentially ‘Mr. Baywatch,’ starring as Mitch Buchannon for the show’s first ten seasons before finally calling it quits before season 11.
- Pamela Anderson, Nicole Eggert, David Charvet, and Alexandra Paul all joined the party in later years, turning the beach into a who’s-who of '90s hair and one-liners.
- Other alumni—Yasmine Bleeth, Gena Lee Nolin, Donna D'Errico, Traci Bingham, and Carmen Electra—became household names (at least for a while) as the show kept adding new faces every season or two.
- Jason Momoa wins the unofficial ‘biggest post-Baywatch career’ award, going from boardwalk newbie to Khal Drogo, Aquaman, and soon, Lobo in ‘Supergirl’ (not a bad upgrade from lifeguard shorts).
Another Reboot? What About the 2017 Movie?
If this deja-vu is ringing a bell, that’s because just a few years ago we got a ‘Baywatch’ movie starring Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson as Mitch, with Zac Efron, Alexandra Daddario, and Priyanka Chopra along for the ride. That one sort of walked the line between reboot and parody, with brief cameos from Pamela Anderson and Hasselhoff, but didn’t exactly launch a new TV franchise.
Breaking Down the Reboot
So, here’s the elevator pitch: The new series is threading the needle between nostalgia and influencer casting, keeping things (a little) connected to the original show by pulling in a couple of recognizable faces. Erika Eleniak summed up the vibe when she signed on:
'I never thought I’d be back on the beach playing Shauni again, but I’m excited to see how our lifeguard family has grown up.'
Mostly, it looks like the new ‘Baywatch’ is banking on two things: our collective nostalgia for cheesy lifeguard melodrama, and the fact that people will tune in if you cast enough TikTok-famous actors and sneak in a few familiar faces.
Will it work? Honestly, who knows. But whether you watched ‘Baywatch’ for the action, the absurd plotlines, or just to count red swimsuits, the reboot is absolutely happening. Stock up on sunscreen.
