Emily in Paris Star Pierre Deny Dies at 69, Fans Mourn Beloved Actor
Emily in Paris fans are mourning Pierre Deny, the French actor who played scene-stealing fashion boss Louis de Léon in seasons three and four, who has died at 69. He launched his career on stage in the 1980s and went on to a long run in television.
If you watched 'Emily in Paris' beyond the first couple of series, you might recognise Pierre Deny as Louis de Léon, the fashion boss who swanned into the Netflix show now and then – more commanding than most in that particular universe, but that’s hardly a high bar. Now comes the sad news that Deny has died at age 69, following a serious battle with ALS, also known as Charcot's disease.
A Career on Stage and Screen (Mostly French, Mostly TV)
For those who aren’t glued to French telly, Pierre Deny was a regular fixture on homegrown series since the 1980s. He actually started out in theatre, which is still how you’re supposed to earn your stripes over here, and then piled up recurring roles on pretty much every big French procedural or soap going. The standouts:
- Julie Lescaut – Police drama, ran forever, basically the Gallic ‘Taggart’.
- Demain Nous Appartient (‘Tomorrow Is Ours’) – One of those sprawling, daily relationship dramas; Deny played Dr. Dumaze for years.
- Une femme d’honneur, Cinq soeurs, Plus belle la vie – All popular French TV staples – if it was shot in France in the last 25 years and had more than three cast members, odds are he was in it.
- Camping Paradis (2025) – Yes, he’d worked right up to the end, popping up in this sunny, undemanding sitcom last year.
He also turned up in theatre alongside names like Sylvie Vartan (in Isabelle Mergault’s comedy play), and his run on 'Emily in Paris' – though brief in the grand scheme – gave international audiences a look at that slightly pained, very Parisian, no-nonsense charisma.
The Circumstances
Deny died on 25 May 2026, after what his family described as a 'sudden and severe' episode of ALS. His daughters issued a statement on French channel TF1, saying:
'It is with deep emotion that we announce the passing of Pierre Deny which occurred this Monday following a sudden and severe case of ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis), also known as Charcot’s Disease.'
The Tributes
This wasn’t a case of showbiz platitudes: his colleagues actually sounded genuinely crushed. Luce Mouchel, Deny’s longtime co-star from 'Demain Nous Appartient,' posted a heartfelt message describing their years of commutes, lunches, and theatre visits, saying she was thinking of his daughters and their strength, and she signed off with a rather sweet nod: 'Rest in peace, Dr. Dumaze.'
Sylvie Vartan, who shared the stage with him in 2015, called him a generous actor, 'and a sensitive and funny man,' adding that her thoughts were with his family and friends.
