Searchlight goes all-in on new nightmares as Chloe Okuno takes the helm of Bad Hand, with Elizabeth Banks producing.

So, here’s a new one for fans of killer appendages: Searchlight Pictures is betting on another 'your body parts hate you' horror flick. It’s called Bad Hand, and the premise is as wild as the title sounds—more on that in a second.

Wait, Weren’t We Just Talking About Evil Hands?

If you follow the genre, you might remember Sony and Jason Reitman hiring Finn Wolfhard and Billy Bryk (the duo behind Hell of a Summer) about a year and a half ago to develop a remake of the 1999 horror comedy Idle Hands. That project is apparently still circling in development-land. But Searchlight is moving fast with their own somewhat similar 'bad hand' story.

A Bloody Premise (Literally)

Watcher director Chloe Okuno is attached to direct Bad Hand, working from a script by April Wolfe, who co-wrote the Black Christmas (2019) reboot. This time around, we get the tale of a nice, non-confrontational kindergarten teacher whose life goes off the rails after she gets hit by a car the week before her wedding.

Here’s where it gets more off the rails: After the accident, her right hand starts acting out—on its own—serving up bloody payback against whoever wronged her. Honestly, it’s in the same weird tradition as Idle Hands, Evil Dead II, and even Oliver Stone’s The Hand if you’re old enough to remember that one.

'A mild-mannered kindergarten teacher, a week out from her wedding, finds her hand has turned homicidal after a hit-and-run.'

Who’s Actually Making This?

Production team:

  • Director: Chloe Okuno (Watcher, V/H/S/94, and some recent TV episodes like Teacup and Let the Right One In)
  • Screenwriter: April Wolfe (co-writer of 2019’s maligned Black Christmas, but also wrote the Francesca Eastwood thriller Clawfoot)
  • Producers: Elizabeth Banks, Max Handelman, and Alison Small for Brownstone Productions
  • For Searchlight: Chan Phung and Marielle Membreno overseeing, reporting up the chain to DanTram Nguyen and Katie Goodson-Thomas

The Fingerprints of the Past

Granted, this is a clear riff on a familiar horror setup—something possessed, darkly comic, and messy. Not the most original, but whatever: I’ve watched (and mostly enjoyed) Evil Dead II, Idle Hands, and even The Hand itself, so I’m not opposed to seeing more filmmakers play around in this sandbox. To be honest, Black Christmas (2019) wasn’t my favorite thing in the world, but Okuno’s Watcher was great and atmospheric, so I’ll give this combo a shot before judging.

Still Early Days

There’s not much else out there on Bad Hand yet—casting, release date, and further details are still under wraps. But, if you’ve ever wanted to see what happens when a teacher’s hand goes full 'Terminator' right before her wedding, this might be the ticket.

Would you actually watch this kind of offbeat horror? Let me know in the comments (assuming the hand lets you type).
