Get ready to scream — a new slasher carves into theaters Aug. 7.

So Eli Roth is officially back in the slasher game, and—believe it or not—it looks like we’re getting a brand-new horror villain from him: the Ice Cream Man. No, not a remake of that cult ’90s oddity starring Clint Howard (I was expecting that twist too). Instead, this is Roth’s very own, new nightmare fuel, and if his recent track record is any indication, he’s about to go even harder than before.

Let’s Start with the Big News

Roth’s next horror flick, 'Ice Cream Man,' now has a release date: August 7. As in, this summer. The film’s teaser poster just dropped too—expect ominous frozen treats.

Wait, Is This Connected to That Other 'Ice Cream Man'?

Nope. There’s no connection to the disposable 1995 movie with Clint Howard. This 'Ice Cream Man' is an original take, not a reboot or a rehash of some VHS nostalgia trip.

What’s the Premise?

The setup is exactly what you’d expect if someone like Roth had free rein over your neighborhood dessert guy: a sleepy summer town gets thrown into chaos after the local ice cream man starts dishing out more than just Rocket Pops to the kids. The description is vague, but if you know Roth, “horrifying results” probably means things go off the rails—gory, boundary-pushing, maybe even cartoonish.

The Cast: Who’s Screaming?

Here’s your scoop (sorry):

  • Ari Millen ('Orphan Black') is the titular Ice Cream Man, so expect some big, unsettling energy there.
  • Benjamin Byron Davis ('Guardians of the Galaxy 3')
  • Karen Cliche ('Thanksgiving')
  • Dylan Hawco ('Heartland')
  • Sarah Abbott ('The Body', 'Poser')
  • Shiloh O' Reilly ('Thanksgiving')
  • Kiori Mirza Waldman
  • Charlie Zeltzer ('The Handmaid' s Tale')
  • Charlie Storey ('Thanksgiving')

If you caught Roth’s 'Thanksgiving', you'll notice a few returners here.

Why Now? How Roth Got Here

Roth’s early days (think 'Cabin Fever' and 'Hostel') made him a horror household name—provocative, sadistic, and not shy about splattering the screen. But let’s be real, some of his later stuff ('Knock Knock', 'The Green Inferno', his random swing at 'Death Wish') didn’t hit the same nerve. Even his kids’ spookfest, 'The House with a Clock in Its Walls', was more goosebumps than gut-churn.

'Thanksgiving' ended that weird streak, finally delivering what fans (and, frankly, the genre) were after. The movie started as a fake trailer back in 2007’s 'Grindhouse' days and took until 2023 to materialize into a full-blown slasher. People clearly wanted more: it was a hit with critics, sold at the box office, and instantly had a sequel announced (which is, of course, currently stalled because everyone in the cast is now suddenly too popular to wrangle at once).

New Company, No More Compromises

After a career of butting heads with censors and having to trim scenes to keep studios happy (Sony, in particular, really clamped down on what he could get away with in 'Thanksgiving'), Roth launched his own label in 2025: The Horror Section. That’s not just hip branding—it pretty much lets him put as much insanity and violence on the screen as he wants.

Roth has doubled down on going hard, inspired by how the 'Terrifier' series managed to go from micro-budget oddity to bonafide event just by ignoring MPAA limits. He openly admitted he’s wanted to make 'Ice Cream Man' for two decades—apparently, the first version was written way back in the early ’00s, right after 'Cabin Fever', but he never felt it was quite right until now.

"I've had Ice Cream Man in my head for 20 years. We had a script written in 2003, 2004, right after Cabin Fever. It was never there yet. And then I rewrote it ... But then when I formed the company, I think what Terrifier did was it showed that unrated movies are mainstream. I was like, 'Okay, we're done.' The violence that I fought for that I had to take out of Thanksgiving, then Terrifier 3 comes out, and I'm just like…But you have to do it independently because it's the Sony Corporation, and they have their own set of rules. And even they shut down Thanksgiving at one point because they saw dailies and they're like, 'We're not going to start this again unless you reshoot that.' And I was like, 'I still got it.'"

What To Expect

Given how Roth talks about finally having carte blanche and his frustration with having to water down 'Thanksgiving', you probably shouldn’t expect 'Ice Cream Man' to play it safe. If anything, he’s hinting this is his most over-the-top horror movie yet—and that’s saying something for the guy who made 'Hostel'.

Whether 'Ice Cream Man' manages to invent a new horror baddie for the ages or just serves up a wild R-rated summer thrill ride, one thing’s for sure: Roth isn’t interested in playing by the old rules anymore. The horror crowd is hungry for mayhem and if Roth gets his way, we’re in for a messy treat when 'Ice Cream Man' arrives in theaters this August.
