A24’s live-action Elden Ring film has already set a budget record — and it’s landed a backer you’ll recognise.

In a move that absolutely no one saw coming from the studio best known for slow-burn horrors and offbeat indies, A24 is charging headlong into blockbuster territory with a live-action film adaptation of the game Elden Ring. Not just dipping a toe in, either—this one's reportedly got a budget so high, it makes their previous most expensive film look like pocket change. And yes, there’s some proper star power involved too.

Elden Ring’s budget clocks in at a staggering $175 to $200 million, the biggest standalone production ever shopped around at a film or telly market.

A24 Swings Big

Alex Garland is behind the camera—worth a raised eyebrow if you know his track record for smart sci-fi and heady fare. Apparently, A24 handed him the keys to their single priciest project, with costs somewhere between $175 million and $200 million. For context, their previous record-holder (Marty Supreme, if you’re keeping score) only cost about $70 million. Either A24 has completely lost its mind, or they know something we don’t about tarnished swords and magical trees.

Was that enough to get a streamer biting? Absolutely. Amazon MGM Studios have grabbed the international streaming rights to Elden Ring, reportedly shelling out tens of millions in the process. The deal is big enough to possibly get Amazon’s Twitch platform in the mix for hype, because what’s a fantasy epic without a bit of live-streamed cheering and meme-generation?

The Cast, the World, the Lore

Garland is adapting FromSoftware’s 2022 hit game, which chucks players into the arcane chaos of The Lands Between—a place brimming with rival factions, deadly beasts, and lore thicker than a George R.R. Martin novel. Speaking of which, George R.R. Martin himself (who helped conjure the game’s mythology) is producing, although it’s anyone’s guess how closely the film will track the game’s plot. So far, no one’s spilling the beans on specific story details.

  • Kit Connor leads as the protagonist
  • Joined by Ben Whishaw and Cailee Spaeny
  • Supporting cast: Tom Burke, Havana Rose Liu, Sonoya Mizuno, Jonathan Pryce, Ruby Cruz, Nick Offerman, John Hodgkinson, Jefferson Hall, Emma Laird, Peter Serafinowicz

This is a very A24 blend of names—some plugged straight from indie hits, others more associated with costume drama or genre television. All in for a sprawling fantasy world complete with ancient runes, shattered relics, and the occasional cryptic prophecy.

Elden Ring will hit cinemas (and IMAX) on 3 March 2028, which might sound ages away, but is probably just enough time for the internet to argue over whether this film can break the supposed "video game movie curse" or just throw itself headfirst into it as well.
