Mark Fowler Jr returned to Albert Square in early 2026, and the soap has spent the months since slowly unpicking a question it first posed a decade ago: who are his real parents?

The short answer — Grant Mitchell and Michelle Fowler — has technically been on the table since 2016. But for Mark himself, and for the wider Square, 2026 is about what that truth actually means.

The backstory

Mark was born in 1996, the result of a one-night stand between Grant Mitchell and Michelle Fowler. Michelle emigrated to the United States shortly afterwards. She told only one person who the father was — her brother, the original Mark Fowler. Grant had no idea.

Mark grew up in America believing a man named Tim Andrews was his dad. That fiction held for two decades.

How the truth first surfaced

The first crack appeared in 2016:

  • Phil Mitchell found a letter from Michelle to the late Peggy Mitchell that referenced Mark's parentage. Sharon and Martin Fowler scrambled to keep it buried.
  • Mark arrived — then played by Ned Porteous — to visit his half-sister Vicki. Grant turned up at the same time.
  • Both families panicked, especially after Mark and Courtney Mitchell — Grant's daughter, and therefore Mark's half-sister — started getting close.

Grant nearly confessed but held back after hearing Mark speak warmly about Tim being a brilliant father. Mark eventually worked it out himself, confided in Sharon, and left for the States.

The 2026 return

Now played by Stephen Aaron-Sipple, Mark reappeared in the New Year's Day flashforward — credited only as "Man" in a scene involving Max Branning's arrest. His full return came later in January, officially to support Vicki during her trial against attacker Joel Marshall.

But as executive producer Ben Wadey teased at the time, the circumstances around Mark's involvement with the Brannings are set to unfold across the year. Flashforward scenes set in January 2027 place Mark squarely alongside Lauren Branning, hinting at a romantic connection that would bind the Fowlers, Mitchells, and Brannings into a single knot.

Where does Mark sit in the family?

The connections run deep:

  • Father — Grant Mitchell. Last on the Square in February 2025, when he told Sharon the next move was Mark's to make.
  • Mother — Michelle Fowler, now in the United States.
  • Half-sisters — Vicki Fowler (Michelle's daughter with David Wicks) and Courtney Mitchell (Grant's daughter with Tiffany).
  • Uncle — Phil Mitchell.
  • Late uncle — Martin Fowler, who died in 2025.
