Dutton Ranch has shown up as Paramount+'s biggest launch ever, clocking 12.9 million views at its premiere. If you squint a bit, it's clearly the next phase for Taylor Sheridan's expanding TV empire—same wild ranch drama, same boiling family squabbles, just with some new faces and a cracked-up energy. To be honest, it’s already turned into a bit of a guessing game every week.

Stepping Into Some Very Large Boots

For those keeping score, Dutton Ranch wastes no time picking up Yellowstone's baton. Beth (Kelly Reilly) and Rip (Cole Hauser) are still swirling around in their chaotic way, pushing the family dynamics to new heights (or depths, depending on your sensibility). And since Kevin Costner’s John Dutton legend was meant to bow out several seasons ago, someone needed to fill that vacuum. Enter Annette Bening as Beulah Jackson, matriarch of the unruly 10 Petal Ranch—she's properly ferocious, and at this point, I'd say she’s more than holding her own as Yellowstone’s spiritual successor.

Deaths, betrayals and a generous serving of saucy relationships, with a particularly dramatic high point for Oreana Jackson (Natalie Alyn Lind) and Carter (Finn Little). The finale went in for the jugular: Oreana revealed she’s pregnant. Is it Carter’s? Even Lind can't confirm it, saying,

'Oreana is a very unpredictable girl. So, in my heart, I believe that it's Carter's, but that's not a question that I have a definitive answer to... There's a lot of genius masterminds working on that right now for season two, and I have not been told one way or another.'

Just to tie a neat bow on all the chaos, they also killed off Oreana’s father, Rob-Will (Jai Courtney), which no one, including the cast, saw coming. Lind was caught off guard herself:

'I was definitely shocked once I read the finale. I had heard that my character may or may not be pregnant. I wasn’t expecting the death [of Rob-Will] and Oreana’s pregnancy to both happen.'

Who’s Running the Show?

If you’ve noticed Oreana shares that same snarky, don’t-mess energy as Beth, you’re not alone—there's even a frankly tense moment after Beth catches her and Carter in bed. Lind enjoys the comparison but is keen to carve out Oreana’s own space, with shades of both Beth and Beulah in the mix:

'Personally, I love when people make the comparison of Oreana and Beth, but she has parallels with both Beulah and Beth. Something that was very important to me from the beginning was creating Oreana’s own individual identity.'

She’s also chuffed to see the show really letting its female characters cut loose:

'Women [characters] who are not afraid to speak their mind and hold dominance in a conversation and kick some ass.'

That kind of confidence is clearly where the Sheridan universe is heading, and it’s a direction Lind is more than happy to go along with—perhaps not as a clone of Beth, but her own force entirely.
