Doug Liman’s Snake Island movie adds Sean Penn and Adrien Brody
Snake Island, Doug Liman’s next film, has lined up Sean Penn — and he’s not the only Oscar winner joining the cast.
Doug Liman – who’s no stranger to a politically-charged thriller – has quietly kicked off filming on his latest, Snake Island, and the casting just levelled up: Sean Penn and Adrien Brody are officially on board. The project’s been bubbling away in Croatia since earlier this year, and it’s set to run through to September. It’s not a studio-backed job, by the way – this one’s strictly indie territory, at least for now.
Ukrainian divers, Nord Stream, and the real-life sparks
The big idea? Snake Island dives into the high-stakes chaos surrounding the 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines – those massive natural gas conduits running from Russia to Germany, owned by Gazprom. This was one of those headline-making moments in the Russia-Ukraine saga: mysterious underwater explosions blow the pipes wide open, gas pours out under the Baltic, and suddenly half of Europe is pointing fingers without a culprit in sight. To this day, nobody’s entirely sure who actually did it – conspiracy theories only multiply with time.
Snake Island is inspired by the 2022 Nord Stream pipeline explosions, still one of the most unsolved events of the Ukraine conflict.
Liman’s film zooms in on a covert unit of Ukrainian divers, operating under the radar before Russia’s full-scale invasion – all very hush-hush and plenty of room for paranoia. Details on who Penn and Brody are playing haven’t leaked (frankly, your guess is as good as mine), but the central tension is straight from those very real post-sabotage investigations: military-grade explosives, international suspicion, and at one point, German prosecutors actually charging a former Ukrainian officer over it. That’s the backdrop.
The team and what’s next
- Doug Liman already wrapped one politically-tinged project, Bitcoin, which apparently skewers real-world powerbrokers – and here he’s sticking with timely content
- This one reunites him with Sean Penn for the first time since the 2010 film Fair Game
- Adrien Brody’s a new addition to Liman’s circle, but both actors are coming in hot: Penn just bagged Best Supporting at the awards for One Battle After Another, while Brody scooped Best Actor for The Brutalist
- Filming is in Croatia and runs through September 2026
Worth noting: Snake Island hasn’t locked in a US release plan yet, and there’s still no official date for cinema-goers. That lack of studio involvement might make things interesting distribution-wise, though with this pedigree I’d be surprised if someone doesn’t snap it up sharpish.
