Donnie Darko sequel book lands this year — and Richard Kelly’s got more up his sleeve

After years of half-rumours and internet wishlists, Donnie Darko really is getting a follow-up – though, as usual with Richard Kelly, nothing’s straightforward. The film’s original writer-director has devoted the better part of a decade to crafting a direct sequel, starting with an 800-page monster of a novel called The Philosophy of Time Travel. That’s not all: if Kelly gets his way, the book’s just the beginning of a much bigger expansion plan for the Darko universe. Strap in, because the timeline here is about as neat as the original film’s.

Sequels on Paper – and Beyond

The first thing you need to know: The Philosophy of Time Travel picks up in 1988, right after the events of Donnie Darko. Plot specifics are, unsurprisingly, locked down, but here’s the gist: the book unfolds in a ‘found documents’ style, told through the eyes (and files) of Donnie’s parents, Rose (Mary McDonnell) and Eddie (Holmes Osborne). Picture both of them obsessively investigating their son’s bizarre demise – spiralling into paranoia, scribbling down theories, chasing leads on what actually happened and why. It’s not a breezy epilogue, but more a page-spanning descent into the abyss, which fits, frankly.

Kelly doesn’t mean for this to stay a novel. The current plan is to adapt it as an animated or motion-capture film – presumably so he can pull off whatever time weirdness he likes, without worrying about actors having aged a quarter-century. But that’s only the first act.

If it all comes together, this phase gets the live-action treatment, with a massive ensemble and (hopefully) the original cast – but there’s a snag. No one has actually agreed to return yet. In fact, Kelly hasn’t formally asked them.

Over the years, he’s stayed in contact with the stars, and he’s quite adamant he can still hear every actor’s voice in his head, both then and now. But as for whether Jake Gyllenhaal, McDonnell, or any of the crew would walk back into the Darko-verse? That’s currently up to them (and, of course, whether the whole project can even get made). Kelly’s plan is fairly polite, if ambitious – the novel will act as a pitch, letting the cast decide for themselves if they want to pick up where they left off. No pressure, honest.

"I’ve kept in touch with all the cast over the years. I’m fairly certain they’re aware that I’ve been working on all this stuff, everything, and the sequel is so big that this book starts off in the 14 months after Donnie’s death, and then there is much more narrative material that I’ve been developing where the time jumps 28 years into the future, and there’s a lot of really exciting stuff that happens starting around 2015/2016 and onward after that, so that’s where I started with the sequel."

So, in summary: Kelly’s building both an animated Donnie Darko sequel that stitches up the immediate aftermath, and a potential live-action instalment set decades later, with the door left open for his original cast (if they're up for it) – plus space for new faces, thanks to modern tech he says 'didn’t exist five years ago'.

As for when to expect the actual book? No firm date yet, but it’s aiming for late 2026, right in time for Donnie Darko’s 25th anniversary. The only real guarantee for fans is that the wait’s almost over – and with Kelly involved, don’t expect anything simple or ordinary.
