Lionsgate gives Jennifer Grey’s Dirty Dancing sequel a major boost, pushing the long-awaited return of the classic closer to theaters.

Yes, you read that right: they’re still not giving up on a new Dirty Dancing sequel, and Jennifer Grey will be back in the corner (sorry, couldn’t help myself). The sequel is inching forward, according to the latest update out of Cannes, with plenty of familiar faces working behind the scenes—but don’t get too hyped for a release date just yet. Basically, the movie’s existence is confirmed, and that’s about as solid as it gets right now.

The Latest Scoop from Cannes

Here’s where things stand: at Cannes 2026, Lionsgate’s President of International, Helen Lee-Kim, gave an update when talking to Deadline. Is a script locked? Not quite. Here’s the honest status update, straight from Lee-Kim:

'They’re in development and we’re waiting for a script.'

So, for those keeping score, ‘in development’ means there’s a ton of behind-the-scenes wrangling, rewrites, and (probably) spreadsheets. But people are getting paid to make this happen, which counts for something.

Who’s Behind This?

The producing duo at the wheel is Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson. If those names sound familiar, it’s probably because they shepherded the Hunger Games franchise and Crazy Rich Asians. They're proven hits on their résumé, so Lionsgate clearly wants some of that commercial magic.

Director-wise, Jonathan Levine (Long Shot, 50/50) has been attached since 2022. Writing the current version is Kim Rosenstock, best known for the podcast-turned-series Dying for Sex.

Jennifer Grey: Back as 'Baby'

Jennifer Grey is locked in as the returning Frances ‘Baby’ Houseman. This was the big announcement earlier this year, and let’s face it, there’s zero chance this sequel works without her. The plot is still a mystery, but Grey’s committed—so, odds are we’re seeing at least some callbacks to the classic.

One gigantic, unavoidable elephant in the dance hall: What about Patrick Swayze’s Johnny Castle? Swayze passed away back in 2009. There’s been talk (per Variety, back in 2022) about the filmmakers coordinating with Swayze’s estate to figure out how his character might be included, whether that’s flashbacks, archival footage, or some kind of tribute. But for now, there’s no official word on exactly how that will play out.

The Original's Long Shadow

Quick refresher: the first Dirty Dancing launched in 1987, directed by Emile Ardolino from Eleanor Bergstein’s script. Jennifer Grey’s character falls for Swayze’s dance instructor at a summer resort, while ‘[I’ve Had] The Time of My Life’ plays at every wedding for the next 30 years. The movie made over $214 million and became a pop culture staple.

If you’re counting spin-offs and reboots, there are more than you might remember:

  • A 2004 prequel (Dirty Dancing: Havana Nights)
  • A 1988 TV series that you probably missed
  • A 2017 televised remake
  • Multiple musical stage versions

What Next?

Right now, there’s no release date, no cast list beyond Grey, and a script that hasn’t settled down yet. If you want a sequel that’s got all its ducks in a row—this isn’t that. But with big-name producers attached and official word from Lionsgate that it’s happening, fans can at least be reassured: nobody’s putting Dirty Dancing in a developmental corner.

(On a side note: at that same Cannes presentation, Lionsgate also plugged another buzz-worthy adaptation—The Housemaid’s Secret with Sydney Sweeney—so keep an eye on their growing list of sequels and remakes.)
