David Boreanaz is game to come back, but a real revival will take more than his nod to get rolling.

Let’s be honest: in the world of crime procedurals, you don’t get much more reliable than Bones. The series wrapped up back in 2017 after an exhausting twelve-season run—246 episodes in all. That’s the sort of number that makes modern streaming shows feel like they’re just doing a long pilot. Still, for all its case-of-the-week formula, the real draw was the will-they-won't-they between FBI agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) and forensic anthropologist Temperance 'Bones' Brennan (Emily Deschanel)—and, yes, in the end they tied the knot and popped out kids. Cute, in a slightly macabre way.

Now, the big question: could Bones ever return? It’s not as ludicrous as it might sound, especially if you’ve been tracking Hollywood’s semi-obsessive nostalgia for dragging old titles back out for ‘reunions’ of varying necessity.

David Boreanaz: 'Never Say Never'

ScreenRant threw the idea at Boreanaz not long ago. His response? Not exactly a hard yes, but he's far from shutting the door:

'What's great about Bones is you can go in and out. I always said that was the one show that I would definitely revisit, as far as going back, because it would be going back and seeing where these characters are now.'

He’s realistic, though. Boreanaz points out the obvious behind-the-scenes challenge: just getting everyone involved again would be a logistical nightmare. He’s still tight with the show’s creator, Hart Hanson, and there’s clear affection for the series—'it holds a special place in my heart.' That said, Boreanaz has never been big on reunions. Apparently, Emily Deschanel teases him for it, but he claims he’s just not the nostalgic type, preferring to focus on what he’s working on in the moment rather than pining for the glory days.

It’s Complicated—And Not Just With the Cast

If you were hoping it was as simple as getting the old gang back together, sorry. Hart Hanson, the man who actually created Bones, is up for it – but only if both Boreanaz and Deschanel are involved:

'Of course, it all depends on David and Emily. Without both of them, no. We have heard that they would not not be game, which is a step. The actors are going to say the truth, which is it depends on what it is, the scripts, what it looks like, if it feels right. They’re not going to do something just because it’s us.'

Hanson’s wording—'would not not be game'—is about as muted as Hollywood enthusiasm gets. It means no one’s officially onboard, but they also haven’t slammed the door.

And, here's the properly tedious bit: the rights mess. The show originally ran on Fox, but Disney now owns 20th Century Fox, which includes Bones. Deciphering who owns what, and where it could stream or broadcast, would, in Hanson's words, take 'a million agents and lawyers'.

Still, creators and cast evidently keep talking, so it’s not completely dead in the water.

What’s Working Against It?

  • The cast are all busy—Boreanaz, in particular, has a new gig lined up as the lead in NBC’s revival of The Rockford Files, due in January 2027.
  • Script quality matters—none of the core players seem willing to come back just for the sake of a cash-in.
  • The rights tangle—see above for the joys of Disney-versus-Fox-versus-who-knows-who.
  • General Hollywood fatigue—there are so many reboots and resurrections happening that it’s not special anymore, and might actually make it harder to stand out.

The bottom line is, if the planets align—cast availability, decent scripts, and a well-paid legal team—a Bones revival isn’t impossible. Nobody’s promising anything, but nobody’s ruling it out either.
