Creatives behind Apple TV+’s multiverse sci-fi say they’ve mapped Season 3 — despite the streamer still not having renewed it.

If you thought Dark Matter was only just finding its feet on Apple TV, think again. The brains behind the streaming sci-fi series are already thinking three steps ahead — in fact, Season 3 plans are out in the wild before Season 2 has even landed. That’s some serious confidence for a show sitting at the intersection of parallel universes and prestige drama, even if Apple TV hasn’t technically given the next chapter a green light yet.

Three chapters, one story

At San Diego Comic-Con, producer Jacquelyn Ben-Zekry gave fans a bit of a tease: they’ve mapped out Dark Matter as a closed, three-season arc, right from the very first pitch for Season 2. It’s worth stressing — none of this is officially signed off, but the intent is clearly there to wrap things up with a third and final run, bringing the story full circle. Here’s how Ben-Zekry explained to ScreenRant what was going on when they approached Apple about the second series:

We designed season two, and when we were pitching it to Apple, and we were going through the process of getting it greenlit we designed the whole show to be three seasons. We see it as a trilogy and that would be such an amazing opportunity to get to end something on your own terms and having a real round and complete story.

She did throw in the usual caveats about hoping it all happens and being excited for people to see what’s next ("so much fun for the fans" — you get the gist). But the underlying message is plain: the story’s built to be a trilogy, not just endless multiverse ping pong for its own sake.

The cast and the premise (if you need a refresher)

The series got its start as a 2016 novel by Blake Crouch, who also adapted it for TV. You’ve got Joel Edgerton leading the pack as physics professor Jason Dessen — or rather, lots of Jasons, because alternate versions are a key part of the fun. The main cast list also boasts Jennifer Connelly as Jason’s wife Daniela, Alice Braga as Amanda Lucas, and Jimmi Simpson as Ryan Holder, covering all angles of the parallel realities twist.

If you somehow missed Season 1: Jason Dessen gets yanked from his timeline by, basically, another version of himself, and dumped into a strange parallel universe. His doppelganger slips into Jason’s old life, fooling nearly everyone bar some twitchy family intuition. Cue reality-hopping, existential melodrama, and a very nervous wife starting to notice that her husband’s got, well, completely different energy.

Dark Matter Season 2 launches on August 28, 2026 on Apple TV.

Season 3 isn’t officially dated or confirmed yet — but the roadmap’s been set, and it’s not looking like anyone’s planning to stretch the multiverse saga past three outings.
