Nearly two decades after its cult debut, slasher favorite Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is rising again as Behind the Mask II: The Return of Leslie moves ahead, reuniting key cast to continue the killer’s story.

Horror sequels have a reputation for popping up out of nowhere long after everyone assumes the story is done, but this is a pretty wild one. After almost 20 years since Leslie Vernon first creeped onto screens (and wormed his way into genre nerds' hearts), that long-rumored sequel to Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon is finally happening. Yes, for real this time.

Seriously, It’s Actually Happening

Variety confirmed that Behind the Mask II: The Return of Leslie Vernon isn't just wishful thinking—it's officially in development. And the fans who spent years sharing, quoting, and generally refusing to let this oddball slasher mockumentary fade into obscurity? Turns out, they're the ones who kept the dream alive. Director Scott Glosserman basically admitted as much, crediting the die-hards for refusing to let Leslie go quietly:

"Fans kept this movie alive by sharing it, quoting it, introducing it to their friends, and treating it like something worth holding onto. This sequel is happening because of them."

Who’s Back, and Who’s In Charge

In a move that should make those same fans pretty happy, the core team behind the original is back in the saddle:

  • Scott Glosserman is returning to direct
  • David J. Stieve is writing again
  • Nathan Baesel will once more play Leslie Vernon
  • Angela Goethals returns as Taylor Gentry
  • And you better believe Robert Englund is coming back as Doc Halloran

On the production front, Paper Street Pictures (run by Aaron B. Koontz and Cameron Burns) is handling things, and Adam F. Goldberg (yes, that Goldberg) is on board as executive producer.

One of Those Long-Shot Sequels That Actually Got Made

Here’s where things tip a little into fan-powered movie territory: Even though the new film is moving forward as an indie, the production is launching a Kickstarter campaign. The idea isn't to get the project off the ground (that part's happening), but to raise extra cash for new scenes and creative upgrades. Or, as Glosserman put it:

"We’re making the movie either way. But the more the audience gets involved, the bigger we can make it."

The Bottom Line

In a world that’s increasingly reboot-happy and IP-obsessed, Behind the Mask getting a proper sequel with its original team after two decades is kind of wild. If you’ve been yelling into the void for more Leslie Vernon, well, apparently it worked.
