After a disappointing box-office run, Masters of the Universe has roared back on streaming — and a chart-topping turn now has fans pleading with Mattel to greenlight a sequel.

Here’s a turn-up for the books: Masters of the Universe, which took an absolute hammering at cinemas, has just shot to the top of the streaming charts. After bombing at the box office, He-Man’s big return is now the most-watched thing on streaming—leaving execs, diehard fans, and casual viewers alike wondering if a sequel’s about to get dusted off.

Masters of the Universe racked up 1.17 billion minutes of streaming in its first week on Prime Video.

From Flop to Top

Let’s rewind a little: Masters of the Universe came out in cinemas with all the noise and expectation you’d expect from a $170 million nostalgia-fest. Didn’t help, though. It opened to a lukewarm $29.3 million (even lower than the studio’s already modest predictions), and by week two, that was down to a paltry $8.6 million. The worldwide haul stopped just shy of $114 million—well below what it would need to break even. Not great, frankly.

Streaming Saves the Day

But all is not lost. Move to July, and the film lands on Prime Video (22nd July, to be exact). Suddenly, it’s everywhere. According to Nielsen, it was number one on their streaming ratings, clocking up a ridiculous 1.17 billion minutes in just seven days—so much viewing time, it managed the rare feat of joining The Big Bang Theory as the only titles to clear a billion minutes for the week. Clearly, He-Man still has an audience, even if they’re all on the sofa in joggers.

Fans: ‘Where’s Our Sequel?’

With numbers like that flying around, the internet’s gone predictably wild. Plenty of fans have popped up on social media, tagging everyone from Mattel to Prime Video and demanding a follow-up. Direct requests range from people pleading for a sequel, to slightly more strategic suggestions like bringing She-Ra into the next one. Naturally, there’s also the crowd moaning about how none of this would’ve been an issue if people had actually bothered to see it at the cinema ("You should have supported it in theatres, now look…"). Despite that obvious logic, the streaming success has given everyone hope a sequel might actually go ahead.

The Talent Involved

  • Director: Travis Knight
  • Lead: Nicholas Galitzine (yes, him again)
  • Camila Mendes
  • Idris Elba
  • Jared Leto
  • Alison Brie
  • …and others

Even with that cast and a blockbuster budget, Masters of the Universe just didn’t land with cinema-goers—but the streaming crowd are making their voices heard, and they want another round. Whether Mattel and Prime Video will risk it again remains to be seen.
