Comedy Meets Cosmic Terror as Kumail Nanjiani and Jim Belushi Join Josh Ruben’s Green Bank
Josh Ruben loads up his next sci-fi shocker as Kumail Nanjiani and Jim Belushi join Brittany O’Grady and Tatiana Maslany in Green Bank.
Let’s talk about Green Bank, a sci-fi horror movie that’s shaping up to be pretty interesting—both because of its cast and, frankly, for its weird real-life inspiration.
So, Who’s In It?
This week, the cast lineup got a shot in the arm with Kumail Nanjiani and Jim Belushi officially coming aboard. Not exactly the duo I expected to see in a small-town, horror-thriller, but here we are. They’re joining Tatiana Maslany (yes, the 'She-Hulk'/‘Orphan Black’ Tatiana), Brittany O'Grady, and Taylor John Smith. With past projects like Scare Me and Werewolves Within, director Josh Ruben tends to collect actors who can handle both character drama and really off-center humor, so Nanjiani and Maslany make sense in his orbit.
The Setting: No Cell Service, No Wi-Fi, Lots of Paranoia
The whole film actually takes its name from a real place: Green Bank, West Virginia. This isn’t just any small town, it’s actually smack in the middle of what’s called the National Radio Quiet Zone—a place where radio transmissions, Wi-Fi routers, even microwave ovens are supposed to be kept to an absolute minimum. (Yes, the government really enforces this, all in the name of scientific research and “military intelligence” since the Green Bank Observatory and Sugar Grove Station are just nearby.)
What’s It Actually About?
The premise is a weird one, even by genre standards: Brittany O'Grady plays Sloan, an infant sleep-trainer—basically a specialized nanny whose job is to get your baby to sleep. She takes on a new client in Green Bank and quickly gets the sense that the parents she’s working for are not just garden-variety clueless yuppies. In true horror fashion, I’m guessing 'not what they seem' leads to something much, much creepier.

What’s the Vibe?
Josh Ruben summed up the goal pretty cleanly:
'In a marketplace where original, horror-thrillers slay at the box office, we need no further proof that audiences want to have fun at the movies again. That’s the magic word. Fun. Horror is the bulletproof genre, and Green Bank has the full package — it’s smart, scary and wickedly funny.'
Meanwhile, Dave Bishop (Protagonist Pictures) chimed in about Ruben serving up, basically, a horror roller coaster—jump scares, weird laughs, and, for some reason, Jim Belushi. I would not have bet on that, but sometimes you want a wild card.
Final Take
I liked Ruben’s previous flicks—they’re always a little twisted and go for actual jokes instead of just jump scares—so Green Bank could be a fun one to watch. The combo of cast and bizarre, almost-tech-phobic real town could make it something more than your usual ‘babysitter in peril’ story.
Let me know what you think: Is this on your radar now, or do you avoid any movie where your phone won’t work?
