Christopher Nolan Reveals Why He Cast Matt Damon as Odysseus
Matt Damon sets sail as Odysseus in Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey, hitting theaters this summer, with the director touting the Oscar winner’s rare gravitas as Damon undergoes a punishing transformation for the role.
Well, here’s one project I would not have put on my 2026 blockbuster bingo card: Christopher Nolan is tackling The Odyssey, Homer’s ancient epic, and Matt Damon—yes, that Matt Damon—is playing none other than Odysseus. If you haven’t been following, this is shaping up to be one of those ‘let’s get physically and emotionally battered for art’ productions, and not just for Damon. It’s Nolan, so you probably guessed that.
Nolan, Damon, and a Literal Epic
Nolan’s already worked with Damon on Interstellar and Oppenheimer, so when he got it in his head to make a big-screen version of Homer’s The Odyssey, he knew exactly who he wanted for the lead. The real surprise isn’t Damon. It’s that Nolan picked up the phone, called Damon, and pitched the role with a single word: Odysseus.
Nolan’s reasoning? He thinks Damon is 'one of the greats.' Not exactly a risky bet. On The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Nolan talked about how it was basically a dream to just call Damon up and pitch him on being a legendary Greek hero. But, as Nolan made very clear to him, this gig was never going to be easy.
'It's going to be very hard,' Nolan warned. Damon's response (according to Nolan): 'Yeah, I know. I know.' Not exactly what I'd call hesitation.
Stephen Colbert pressed a little further, mentioning how Damon described The Odyssey as 'the hardest movie' he’s ever made. Nolan didn’t argue—actually, he confirmed it. Apparently, this production was tough for everyone—and intentionally so. Why? Because, as Nolan put it, the source material is only 'the greatest epic in literature.' No pressure.
Doing it All For Real—Because Nolan
In classic Nolan fashion, the goal was to avoid the safety net of CGI as much as possible. He said they wanted to 'really get out there on the seas, climb the mountains, go in the caves, all of that.' I guess no one told the man you can lease a wind machine and some green screens.
Matt Damon Gets Jacked (Or at Least, Very Greek)
Let’s not skip the prep work Damon put in. For this shot at Greek legend status, he went all-in with a strict diet and serious physical training, resulting in what’s being described as a 'significant body transformation.' Basically, he went full method hero.
Who's On This Ship?
- Matt Damon as Odysseus (Try to picture that for a second.)
- Tom Holland
- Anne Hathaway
- Zendaya
- Robert Pattinson
- Charlize Theron
- And, honestly, probably half of Hollywood by the time Nolan’s done
The Long Road to Release
Nolan isn’t just directing—he wrote the script as well, and he’s producing alongside Emma Thomas (his wife and longtime producing partner) under their SynCopy banner. The Odyssey lands in theaters on July 17, 2026.
So, that’s the deal: one of the toughest productions Nolan’s ever done, Damon in his most physically demanding role yet, and a cast stacked to the rafters—all in service of bringing a 3,000-year-old story to IMAX screens. I didn’t see it coming, but honestly? I kind of want to see Damon dodge a Cyclops.
