Christian Bale says he went shockingly far to disappear into Al Davis for upcoming biopic Madden — and one especially grim tweak may make you flinch.

If there’s one thing Christian Bale loves, it’s making everyone else in Hollywood look like they’re not really trying. His latest move? Shaving off every strand of hair and letting professionals have a go at his eyebrows—all to become Al Davis in David O. Russell’s upcoming biopic, Madden. And no, this wasn’t just method acting by halves, it was full-on commitment, eyebrow follicles and all.

Madden arrives in some US cinemas on 11 November 2026, with Prime Video streaming to follow a week later.

Bale’s Transformation: Nothing Subtle

The dedication here comes straight from Bale himself. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight, he went through the grisly checklist: head fully shaved, eyebrows done for, all in the name of accuracy. Hair team on standby, naturally, to perfect that Al Davis sheen. Training for the role meant going beyond simply looking the part—though if you know Al Davis, the look is half the battle. Bale didn’t exactly understate his fondness for Davis either, calling him something of an icon and saying the performance was a bit of a love letter to one of American football’s most infamous figures. ‘I loved him so much. I love playing him. Such an icon,’ he put it in the interview. Clearly, he was gutted when filming wrapped, saying he really rued the day he had to let go of the character. If you’re counting, this is classic Bale—forever risking eyebrows (and much else) for the cause.

The Film and the Cast

Now, Madden isn’t just the Christian Bale one-man show. Nicolas Cage shows up as John Madden himself, apparently donning a fat suit to complete the look, as if this film needed another dose of actorly commitment. The story tracks Madden’s rise and partnership with Davis, right through the birth of the Madden NFL video game empire. Directorially, David O. Russell keeps the whole circus in order (as much as he ever does), sharing writing duties with Cambron Clark.

  • Kathryn Hahn is on Virginia Madden duty
  • John Mulaney does the honours as Trip Hawkins, the man behind Electronic Arts
  • Sienna Miller plays Carol Davis
  • Shane Gillis and Joel Murray add the final touches to the supporting line-up

Amazon MGM is making Madden something of an event: first stop, a select bunch of US cinemas on 11 November 2026, before heading to Prime Video on the 18th. Stadium snacks optional, but frankly, after Bale’s eyebrow tribute, we probably owe him that at least.
