Chris Evans Reveals the Real Reason Steve Rogers Comes Out of Retirement in Avengers: Doomsday
End of the coy act: Chris Evans finally reveals what lured him out of retirement and why Steve Rogers returns in Avengers: Doomsday, just as the film hits theaters.
You know those Marvel 'will-they, won’t-they' casting rumors that spiral for years, everyone keeps denying stuff, and then—surprise—they were lying through their teeth the whole time? Well, Chris Evans finally fessed up about returning as Captain America in Avengers: Doomsday. After dodging questions for, honestly, way longer than was believable, Evans shared why he put the star-spangled suit back on, and yes, the story is as Marvel-y as it gets.
Steve Rogers Is Back (And Evans Finally Admits It)
At CinemaCon 2026 in Las Vegas, Disney had the whole Marvel circus going: Kevin Feige, Anthony and Joe Russo, Robert Downey Jr., and Chris Evans himself all turned up to hype Avengers: Doomsday. This time, Evans didn’t play coy—he straight up explained why Steve Rogers is out of retirement. According to Evans, he wasn't convinced to return just for nostalgia’s sake:
'I said I would only come back if there was a real reason, and in Doomsday, there’s a very real reason why these heroes need Steve Rogers.'
The best part? Evans couldn’t resist poking fun at Robert Downey Jr., who’s apparently playing Doctor Doom in the new film, saying: 'I don’t like him.'
Everyone Denied, Nobody Believed It
If this all sounds like déjà vu, that’s because rumors of Evans’ return started floating around back in December 2024, way before Doomsday even started filming. Like clockwork, Evans brushed off these rumors with the usual Marvel actor playbook:
- January 2025, Esquire: 'That’s not true, though. This always happens. I mean, it happens every couple years, ever since Endgame. I’ve just stopped responding to it... Yeah, no, happily retired!'
- ScreenRant Interview: 'It’s sad to be away. It’s sad to not be back with the band, but I’m sure they’re doing something incredible.'
Of course, if you’ve paid even a little attention to Marvel PR over the years, you know actors flat-out deny, side-step, or joke about cameo rumors until Marvel Studios lets them talk.
So What’s Actually New in Doomsday?
Aside from dragging Steve Rogers out of a well-earned retirement, the Doomsday trailer—shown behind closed doors at CinemaCon—confirms the film is pulling out all the stops with team-ups and timeline twists. The two biggest reveals:
- Steve Rogers got back together with Peggy Carter and they have a son in the current MCU timeline. (Yup, Hayley Atwell is reportedly back, as we heard earlier this year.)
- The new Avengers flick throws together the original Avengers, the Fantastic Four, and Fox’s X-Men, which is about as crossover-heavy as you can possibly get without making the screen explode from cameos.
What About Secret Wars?
Is Evans sticking around for Avengers: Secret Wars? Right now, that remains a big question mark. All anyone’s saying is that production gears up this summer for the last chapter of Marvel’s so-called Multiverse Saga.
When Can You See Steve's Comeback?
Avengers: Doomsday drops in theaters on December 18. So, you’ve got a few months to speculate about how many timelines, multiverse shakeups, and alternate versions of Captain America are going to show up.
Bottom line? Never trust a Marvel actor telling you they’re 'retired.' Some things in the MCU are inevitable, and apparently, Steve Rogers coming back is one of them.
